SHALL WE HAVE A REC POST? LET'S HAVE A REC POST. REC POSTS ARE COOL.
Because if there's one thing the newbies need when they come here, it's a place to find the fandom classics. The stories that became fanon. Those that influenced us all, and continue to do so. I asked my_croft if this was legit, and he said Yes of course, but obviously I couldn't gather everything that was ever written, that'd be impossible, we're the oldest fandom ever. So, all, this is a dynamic post! just add in your favourites, everything you've ever loved about this fandom, everything you think new members of the comm would need to know - your favourite fics, your favourite essays, your favourite fanart, your favourite zines, your favourite characters, your favourite everything! make this fun for everyone, this post must be FILLED WITH LOVE.
I'll start.

The Remembrance Series, by

Holmes/Watson | NC-17 | 43,000 words
It was quite the wonderful thing, these Strand books standing in line, on our shelves, thin red-spined soldiers that told old stories, stories I had written once and then forgotten as I wrote more. I set the last one down, and as my hand lingered on its cover, where it rested against a bronze elephant of a bookend, I heard Holmes muttering to himself in one of our lumber-rooms, where he doubtless accomplished a task equal to mine. He had kept all his notes, after all, of every case I had ever recorded, of those I had published, of those I kept safely locked away. His were a chaotic, disorderly mess, and mine - well, here were mine. Locked away as well, in a sense, in the sharp prison of my words and pretty falsehoods. Thirty years of them, and grown silver in our memory.
The One. The Ultimate. The Only. It begins in autumn 1914, two weeks after His Last Bow and two more before Watson departs for the front in France; and then - by way of memory - travels back in time to key periods of their relationship. jumperfucker recounts thirty years of two people being so in love it physically hurts, and does so in the best, most aching way imaginable.
The Special Way, by
storm_ford Holmes, Watson, Lestrade | PG-13 | 5,900 words
'There is a certain amount of the ridiculous in this,' Holmes remarked matter of factly.
'Yes, Holmes, you're very perceptive. That is quite a remarkable account of our present situation. Now would you please apply your exceptional powers of deduction to ascertaining a way out for ourselves?'
'I say, this is very uncomfortable.'
'Lestrade, that's my - er - that's a rather private. Part. That you've got your face pressed against. Of mine. A private part of mine, I mean.'
'Don't fluster the good inspector, Watson.'
'Holmes, there are merely some parts of my anatomy that I wish the good inspector had nothing to do with.'
'Well, at least it isn't the Thames this time.'
'Yes, we're all still dressed. I suppose you assume this is a good point.'
'Is this you two trying to be subtle?'
Best. Crackfic. Ever. Holmes, Watson and Lestrade are stuck in a closet. Everything goes to hell very very fast.
Hello, by
neveryou_again Holmes/Watson | R | 15,700 words
'Holmes,' he said, 'this is preposterous. You have but one word to say and I shall follow you this evening, wherever you please. If you have gotten tired of my company - '
'Nonsense, Watson! You have had a very trying week, I know. I should not wish to inflict a long, tiring stake-out upon you.'
'I would hardly call my week tiring, Holmes. I have spent it tending to rheumatic spinsters who believe everything is the matter with them, and then coming home to see you locking yourself in your room as soon as I step through the threshold. What on earth is the matter with you?'
Angst, UST, and misunderstandings by the dozen, written in a delicious pastiche of Doyle's style. never_youagain captures all the difficulties and complexities of having a relationship with an addict, and trying to work it out, and sometimes failing. She also teaches us, with the greatest care and compassion, that sometimes, just sometimes, when you think you're just not going to be alright, there's still hope. And there's still a way.
The Back Staircase, by
w_harry Holmes/Watson, Irene/Mary | NC-17 | 6,000 words
'Sit down, my dear,' Holmes murmured, rubbing his well-lubricated hands together briskly as he towered about me, his slate eyes taking in every detail of my anatomy. 'Make yourself quite comfortable, I shall be attending to you in an instant. Would you terribly mind undoing my trousers? my hands are somewhat occupied, you see.'
A fandom agrees: w_harry writes the best porn, slash and femslash both. She isn't afraid of anything kinky, and makes even physical technicalities sound hot. (Trust me, this is coming from a doctor, I know how unsexy a close-up look at a man's perineum can be. And yet w_harry makes it somehow really fucking sexy.)

An Evening In Bed, by

DO NOT OPEN THIS AT WORK. OR WITH ANYONE IN THE ROOM. AND MAKE SURE TO HAVE A SHOWER NEARBY.
consulting_detective's art has become fanon by now, I'm sure, and much as I'm sure he would scold me for not focusing on his drawing techniques and crayon skills, I'll just touch a word on the (gorgeous) anatomy and then just tell you all how marvelously hot his art is. Like jumperfucker, though, this really stands as a rec for everything he's ever drawn - just follow the tags on on his journal.
