Help me, nonnies! I started reading this a while ago, but I don't think I ever finished it for some reason. Basically, Holmes was an alien sent to study humankind, and got fairly badly injured.

Mrs Hudson may have been an alien too. I can't remember.

I do remember the tentacles, though. I remember that very clearly.
