pairing: holmes/watson
summary: Present-day city college AU. Sherlock Holmes is a 3rd year student without a major, without a purpose, who missed the housing applications and badly needs a roommate. John Watson just got discharged from the army because of a leg wound, and he plans to start medical school. He also badly needs a roommate.
So it's a Study in Scarlet story, only the plot is completely different, and Holmes isn't an independent investigator yet, he's just this kid who likes to hang around crime scenes and reads too many thriller novels (annoying the heck out of junior officer Lestrade, who would really like to do real police work but keeps getting told to 'get that guy out of here', which is no mean feat.) John is trying to reconnect with his previously long-distance girlfriend Mary, who has grown up while he was off serving and he doesn't quite recognize anymore.
This is all sort of nice and funny and all right, until a real mystery gets shoved right under their noses, and Holmes won't let them push him away this time.
(Also making an appearance are Mycroft, John's alcoholic goodfornothing brother Henry, criminal justice major and trombonist Stanley Hopkins, Irene almost-Norton Adler, and of course, Holmes's suspiciously wealthy astronomy professor.)
