The Black Dragon VI

Title: The Black Dragon
Rating: PG
Warning(s): English Grammar Rules thrown out of the window for this tale; AU
Summary: "She is the one destined to defeat Thalionaur, Manwë."
Author's Notes: The prequel to 'The Lady of the Rings' (my as yet unwritten re-imagining of 'The Lord of the Rings'), this story is set at some point during the first half of 'The Silmarillion'. My first (and currently only) time writing prose poetry, this story was also the first I ever wrote that had foot-notes. As this story was written back when I was in the ninth grade, it lacks the maturity of my more recent stories. Also, I made up a whole race (or possibly two) of elves for this story. Hopefully that doesn't mean that Tolkien's rolling in his grave?

part six
"You have already asked,
Palantir(1),
So I should answer.
The Elf-maid,
Of your blood,
Is she--
Corcrist(2),
Ringbreaker.
The Hobbit Warrior,
Kin of her father's folk.
Ringbearer,
Nephew and heir
Of a burrahobbit(3),"
Answered Mandos.
"Burrahobbit?"
Questioned Mauri.
"You will
Understand someday,
Unfir(4),"
Mandos answered.
"I am fir(5),
Not unfir,
Mandos!
I'm one of the Naureldar!"
Said Mauri,
Surprised.

An eagle landed
On the Fountain of Life.
Mandos turned and bowed,
"Manwë."
"Rise, Brother,"
Commanded Manwë,
"And tell me
What you have done!?
You've given the daughter of
Coradan and Corebereth
Immortal life(6)!
Why did you do that?"
"She is the one
Destined to defeat
Thalionaur(7),
Manwë,"
Said Mandos.
"Are you sure of this,
Mandos?
You know the dangers,"
Asked Manwë.
"Yes,
As you well know,"
Affirmed Mandos.

All this happened
Without the knowledge
Of Mauri Palantir,
Uncrowned queen
Of the Naureldar,
And Araglas of Gondor,
Lost Dunedain.

Manwë turned to
Palantir,
And spoke.
"Palantir,
I am Manwë,
King of the Valar
And
Lord of the Winds,"
Said Manwë,
Now a man
Dressed in
Fine brown calfskin trousers,
Royal in
A shirt of snow-white linen
And gold-encrusted vest,
Crowned by
Golden wreath of leaves,
And standing in
Brown calfskin boots.

Mauri and Araglas
Turned and bowed,
Mauri saying,
"My Lord Manwë,
Why are you here?"
"Always to the point,
Just like her forebearer,
Elhíríl(8),
Right, Mandos?"
Commented Manwë,
Calm despite Mauri's disrespect.
"Right, Manwë,"
Answered Mandos,
With a smile
That chilled
Araglas to the bone,
But not Mauri Palantir
Of course!

The sound of horns--
Oromë's horns(9)--
Rang through the
Still cave air.
And then suddenly
Araglas, Luin,
And Mauri Palantir
Found themselves in
Valimar--
Aman, the Blessed Realm(10)!--
In the Ring of Doom(11)--
The thrones of the Valar
Ringed the trio.

Mandos,
Still cloaked
In doom and gloom.
Manwë,
The winds of all Arda
Whistling 'round his head.
Varda,
Kindler of the Stars.
Oromë,
Lord of the Hunt.
Lorien,
Dreamy-eyed and chaotic.
Yavanna,
Giver of Fruits
And creator of the Two Trees.
Aulë,
Dwarf-father
And worker of metals and jewels.
Tulkas,
Brave and kind-hearted.
Nessa,
Wife of Tulkas.
Nienna,
Mournful sister of
Gloomy Mandos and
Of dreamy Lorien.
Eönwë,
Herald of Manwë.
Estë,
Restful queen.
Ossë,
Maia of the Seas.
Olorin(12),
Wandering Istari(13).
Salmar,
Allied with Ulmo.
Uinen,
Lady of the Seas.
Ulmo,
Lord of the Waters,
Ulumúri(14) at his side.
Vairë,
Wife of Mandos.
Vána,
Queenly wife of Oromë.
All were there,
Waiting for the judgement
On the fate of
Three simple souls.
Three simple souls,
Yet three complex beings.

1. Literally translates to mean "that which sees far". In this context, it refers to Mauri's gift of Farsight.
2. "Ring-Cleaver". A title of Roseanya Took.
3. A reference to Bilbo Baggins, who introduces himself as a "burrahobbit" to a trio of trolls in 'The Hobbit'.
4. Unfir ("not mortal", "immortal") refers to the immortality of Mauri. Naureldar--with the exception of Mauri--are mortal as a result of Mauri's parents, who chose to align themselves with Melkor.
5. "Mortal".
6. Mandos gave Mauri immortality. Manwë can tell that he did, but not how. He assumes that Mandos allowed Mauri to drink from the Fountain of Life.
7. Mandos is refering to a vision Lorien had of Mauri's victory over Thalionaur--this vision was known only to Lorien, Mandos, and Manwë.
8. Elhíríl ("Lady of the Stars", literally "Star-Lady"), Mauri's maternal grandmother, the youngest daughter of Dior and the sister of Elwing, the eldest of the Naureldar.
9. Oromë was the hunter of the Valar, the first to see the Elves.
10. Valimar and Aman are names of Valinor, the land of the Valar.
11. The Ring of Doom was the meeting place of the Valar in Valinor.
12. The maia later known as Gandalf.
13. The Istari are a group of Maiar also refered to as "wizards".
14. The horns of Ulmo, Ulumúri create the haunting song of the Sea.
