Jim watched as Sulu and Chekov enjoyed themselves in their attempts to surf (the surfing instructor had gotten pissed off at Chekov's insistence that surfing had been invented in Russia and had left them both to fend for themselves).
Suddenly a wet head made itself comfortable in the captain's lap.
"Bones!" yelped Jim.
"You were lookin' mighty lonely, Jim," Bones explained, "and I couldn't have that."
"Because you love me?" Jim asked.
"Well, that too," Bones replied, "but mainly because you were on the cusp of doing something mighty stupid."
"Me? Do something mighty stupid? You must be mistaken, Bones," Jim insisted, "I wouldn't do anything to disobey my doctor's orders."
Bones snorted.
"I wasn't born yesterday, Jim," he announced.
"Can't I at least get myself wet?" Jim begged.
"The current is too strong, Jim," Bones replied, a note of sorrow in his voice, "it pulled me over and I'm not even injured."
Apparently that statement was a cue for Uhura and Chapel to dump salty ocean water on Jim and Bones, because as soon as the words came out of the doctor's mouth, the two women dumped water on both of them.
