"Spock, please tell me you have a rational explanation for this," Jamie groaned as she massaged the bridge of her nose in the vain hopes of preventing the migraine she could feel developing there.
"I do, Captain," the half-Vulcan replied.
"Really?" Jamie asked, surprised by Spock's words.
"According to the sensor logs, there was a massive burst of energy within the warp core at the exact moment that Mira(1) appeared in Engineering, Captain," the first officer clarified, referring to the Enterprise's unexpected guest by the name they had given her (technically, McCoy had been the one who had named the woman, claiming that "Enterprise" was no name for a humanoid, regardless of origins).
"Enough energy to create matter?" Jamie asked.
Spock nodded, having already calculated the amount of energy required to create Mira.
"Who would be behind such an act though?" Jamie wondered aloud.
"That would be me," a voice suddenly declared.
Jamie and Spock turned to face the intruder, a humanoid male of average Terran height and build, with short brown hair and playful grey eyes, dressed in the uniform of a Starfleet Captain of equal rank to Jamie.
Despite wearing the uniform of a Captain, the stranger could never have passed for one, as he lacked the aura of authority Starfleet seemed to require of its commanding officers.
"Who are you?" Spock demanded, subtly placing himself between the intruder and his Captain.
The intruder noticed the half-Vulcan's actions, but chose to disregard them, as he was not here to directly interfere in the lives of the famed duo.
"You can call me 'Q'," he informed the half-Vulcan.
"What do you want, Q?" Jamie demanded.
"Nothing," Q replied. "I simply wished to make your Chief Engineer's life a little bit more interesting."
"You can't just create new life on a whim, Q," the captain boldly challenged him.
Rather than be annoyed or angered by Jamie's challenge, Q was amused.
"Why not, Jamie?" he asked.
"There are repercussions, serious repercussions, to creating life carelessly," Jamie replied, ignoring the stranger's use of her first name.
"I can unmake her if you insist," Q offered.
"Mira stays, Q," Jamie quickly insisted. "But you knew that I would say that, of course."
Q was impressed, and a little bit put out, by how coolly this captain of the Enterprise was handling his presence.
Pestering Picard (and Janeway) really was more fun in Q's opinion.
Truth be told, he wouldn't even had created Mira--what a quaint name the humans had given his creation!--in the first place if not for the fact that her presence was required on the Enterprise to help heal the wounds created by Nero, but he wasn't going to tell any lesser beings that.
Q was gone before Jamie could ask why he'd felt the need to "make the Chief Engineer's life a little bit more interesting".
"Do you think he'll be back, Spock?" Jamie asked.
Spock shook his head.
"I got the impression that he had left for good, Captain," he replied.
1. Mira ("the amazing one") is the common name of a red giant in the constellation of Cetus ('the whale'), Omicron Ceti. A prototype of the long-period variable stars, flucuating between about 3rd and 9th magnitudes over an average period of 330 days.
