Chemist. My inner cynic wants to say that he was drinking on the job, but my inner Holmes immediately points out that the chemist wouldn't be able to hide his drunkenness from Holmes when he went to fill the prescription Watson gave him and would have taken his business elsewhere. So I'm figuring it was a simple accident, a mistake made out of exhaustion after a long day of filling prescriptions.
