For the record...

My first year at Vividcon was 2009 and I had THE GREATEST TIME OF MY LIFE. elynross and the concom were all brilliant and it broke my heart to see all the wank thrown at them afterwards (once everyone was home and in their safe space again).

For the current wank I'd like to point everyone to jarrow's post because he says sooo much goodness. Meanwhile I'll be e ( Read more... )

Are triggers a big thing with vidders right now? Considering what gets vidded that kind of surprises me.

Yeah. People are really sensitive when it comes to everything now.

Lol!

Ok trigger warnings are something that you'd put before your fic or vid to warn people if there are things in said fic or vid that might be "triggery" like rape, abuse, suicide, etc. etc. It's triggery because if you stumble upon it unawares then people who have experiences with those things might have an unwanted traumatic response.

Obviously it would be bad for people to have such a response but imo people can get really excessive with the warnings they put and that's where the problem comes in of it stifling your art.

I'm fairly certain all the work you do does not require trigger warnings of any kind. ;)

No prob. And yeah, it didn't really exist in the vidding community until recently. Now it's bleeding through. There's a fine line there because it's visual and some vids really walk the line of being straight up art pieces so that's where the debate comes in of if you can do this to art or not. But yes, "Jesus for the Jugular" would have a bunch of trigger warnings, and so would "Climbing Up the Walls."

I read part of the recent wank and I can understand that you feel pressured now. I hope it won't spoil the con for you.

Are you going this year? If yes, I hope you still have a great time! I've never been to it myself but from what I read and heard it must be amazing!

I obviously don't want people to be hurt, but I also don't like the idea that trigger warnings will make people assume the worst from a vid and choose to skip it when it could easily be an exaggeration of warnings by a vidder trying to cover all bases and be all PC and the vid isn't that triggery at all.

I'm going this year, yup, and despite the wankstroms I highly recommend Vividcon to anyone. It's really the greatest party ever. :D

That's exactly how I feel. Yes, nobody should get hurt due to a lack of warnings, but when I think about possible warnings for my vids I only come up with stuff which would totally distort my own perception of the vid. And how can I then descibe it in a way that seems completely wrong to me?
Does this make sense? I don't know...

Yup, it makes sense, especially since I mentioned something similar in one of the comments below. That as the artist you're forced to label your own art and maybe that's not something you wanted to do. At times you might want the audience to come up with their own conceptions of the vid. Something like that. ;)

What about the fact that, for some, feeling like control is being taken away from you is a trigger?
LOL! Trigger warnings are a trigger!

Don't worry, you can rant away. You have valid points as do all sides of this argument. I guess for me the problem with excessive trigger warnings, as I said in the comment above, is the fact that it might give people a certain impression about the contents of your vid that might not actually be there. So they'll choose not to see it when really there might not be anything that bad in the vid and the vidder is just being pressured into adding a gazillion trigger warnings just because everyone's doing it. So who wins in that situation? No one. And the art does not get seen.
