I really want a pet.
I figure next year I'll have the time/ money to look after & love it & I just really want a little companion. There are studies that say people are more at ease with pets & such. I haven't had a pet since grade 10.
So, I really wanted a turtle but you have to be mad careful with them & can't handle them too much so that put me off them, even though I still think they're rad animals.
We can't have a dog, because my Mom won't let us, & we can't have a cat because my Dad's allergic.
Fish don't really do much.
I don't think I could handle a reptile (even though, they too are very very cool).
& hampsters have a very short life span.
So, I've narrowed it down to a rabbit or a guinea pig.
I love rabbits. Our last rabbit Petey was the most amazing pet: he was very loveable, sometimes energenic, & sometimes quiet. A good size for our house too.
I've never had a guinea pig but reading about them, you should buy 2, because they're social animals & don't like to be lonely. But they too seem loveable & a good size for our house, & a pet I've never had before. I just don't know if I could handle 2. I'd like to think that I'd have enough time to spend with the animal that s/he wouldn't be lonely but I work 6 days a week for 8 hours, so s/he'd be home alone all day.
The problem with both animals is that they looove to chew. This is why my Mom doesn't want another rabbit (even though she loooved the last one, I swear she could talk to him), because we live in a house built in the 1930's so we have lots of old woodwork & Petey ruined a fair bit of it. My Dad doesn't want guinea pigs because he had a bad experience with them as a kid.... but they weren't smart & bought a boy + a girl so they got pregnant alot. I'd get 2 girls.
So, my stroke of genius is to adopt from the
Toronto Humane Society. I think that it's a great idea to give an animal a second chance.
They don't have alot of guinea pigs listed, but there's
Archie who seems used to living without another guinea pig, but his previous owner was probably very quiet & my house isn't really. But it also says he would do well with older children or with a first time piggy owner & that's me.
Then there's a rabbit that I've become really attached to,
Laurie. & I have become attached to her because like Petey she only has one eye. Most people were really put out when we told them Petey only had one eye, but we still loved him all the same. She's also alot younger than Archie. But if she's already had problems with her eye, then the chances are high that she'll have more problems.
Then there's the overall hurdle of death, which is why my Dad doesn't want a dog. (He was really really attached to the dog he had as a child, Jojo.) It makes me sad just thinking about it.
So I guess if anyone has any opinions or experiences with these animals/ my ramblings, please share, because I really am seriously considering getting some sort of pet. I'm currently reading a book about guinea pigs to learn more about them.
Cheers.
