There were a few years during childhood (late elementary school-junior high years) during which my father banned sugar from our home after having read "The Sugar Blues" and becoming convinced of the evils of the stuff.
My brother and I would get desperate for cookies, candy, anything. I mean, we weren't even allowed to have sweetened cereal for breakfast.
One day while putting away groceries, I noticed that the "Hartz ABC's" dog treats were allegedly vanilla flavored. Being desperate, I had to try them, and convinced my brother to join me.
They weren't bad! At least, for kids in our position.
Of course, that didn't last long, because mom noticed that the biscuits were going fast and started to yell at us for giving them to Taffy, our dog, too often. I finally fessed up and said we'd been eating them because we just wanted a cookie!
I believe fig newtons were the initial cookie compromise between my parents. Gradually sugar was reintroduced into our house and all was well with the world.
But I still occassionally snuck one of those ABC's. They were tasty! :P
