So now that I've had great feedback on the first (and sounds like the last) draft of my informal caregiving article for the Torch, I can get pumped about it coming out right as I graduate. And it's way long. Longer than the 1000-1200 words we agreed to. I've probably gotten it expanded to 1800 or so, which is great news when you're contracted to be paid by the word. And we're talking about some of my photos on spec. Right fucking on. And great timing.
Kyle's brother, his fiance from Germany and his two daughters have been using our place as a safe house for the past two weeks. The 7- and 9-year-old girls were under threat of being kidnapped by their crazy maternal grandfather who apparently has a gun and who assaulted Trevor at the elementary school two weeks ago in front of kids, teachers and other parents. Restraining orders are in place and they're going to court again on Thursday. They're all safe and comfortable here, but I know they want to go home. The girls are changing schools over this, which is pretty sad, but it's definitely the right thing to do in this situation.
Considering there's nine people living in the house, it's been a little hard to concentrate, but it's not as crazy as I thought it would be. I mean, there's no question that they should be here...but I still have to carry on with what I have to do for school, the kids, the two part-time jobs, the house, the alcoholic mother-in-law who lives downstairs, the depressed and chronically ill partner.... Sometimes it feels like life is conspiring against my goal of graduating this semester! I'm totally taking it all in stride, laughing at the weirdness of life at the moment, but it does get a little oppressive from time-to-time. See, I really did need a lift!
