The Gaffer

A young spiritual apprentice asks his master for permission to enter the next level of his training. The master replies, “Puffs of air from the gaffer's lips craft molten sand and stone into shape. A liquid bubble on the tip of his hollow blowpipe dips and twirls, rises and falls, like a ball of glowing honey. The glass blower must endure toxic fumes and blistering heat to achieve his goal, as glass is only supple while hot and he must repeatedly place his blowpipe into the furnace. He must work quickly and with confidence. If he touches the bubble too soon, it will warp and his fingers will sear. If he cools the glass too quickly, it will shatter. Only when cool and transparent can the new shape be handled.”
