So it goes

Nefarious things are afoot in this sleepy (read: very fucking dull) little northern village. Evil Logging Corporation Metsähallitus (the Finnish state forestry enterprise) is cutting down old forests in our county and it's got people riled up, among those my father. Today there even was a demonstration, probably a first one for my parents. I'm on their side, of course, but I can't help but do some secret, cynical smirking. How many times has dad ranted about Greenpeace and the Green Party and how they're trying to "turn all of Lapland into a national park"? Greenpeace was in Lapland (in a neighbouring county) not too long ago raising a fuss over some logging on behalf of local reindeer herders, and dad, like the great majority over here, really voiced their disdain for such hampering of the logging industry. But what happens when Metsähallitus turns its gaze on our county? These same people who treat environmentalists with derision (they're all meddlesome southern city bastards, doncha know) are now outraged on behalf of forests. They're ours, that makes all the difference in the world, of course.

Anyway. The demonstration even got on the national news! It won't help, but at least they got involved and tried to change things. Welcome to the wonderful world of environmental activism, dad. I'd gift you with a Greenpeace membership on your next birthday, but I don't want to be disowned. Haw!
