SB3 Bloody Angel Volume 1 Chapter 1 Translation

May 19, 2013 22:08

...Well, I have returned.

Although I can't say I'm too fond of Ayumu, this manga is proving interesting in that it's significantly darker than the game, and depicts some events that weren't made into cutscenes or even mentioned at all. Also, oblique references to traumatic backstories!

(Be warned, though I've tried to make it easy to follow, everyone is incredibly verbose...aside from Ayumu, who can't form a sentence to save his life.)

Hope you enjoy reading!

Sengoku BASARA 3 Bloody Angel is written and drawn by Ryu Itō with the supervision and cooperation of CAPCOM.

NARRATOR: It is the Sengoku Era.
-FIRST DESTRUCTION-NARRATOR: At the Incident at Honnōji, the so-called Devil King of the Sixth Heaven, Oda Nobunaga, was betrayed by his own vassal, Akechi Mitsuhide, and perished.
Mitsuhide had conquered the country, but he too was defeated…
By Toyotomi Hideyoshi, commander of the Toyotomi Army.

-FIRST DESTRUCTION-
-BLOODY ANGEL-
NARRATOR: And so…
NARRATOR: Now…

AYUMU: *wretches*
*gasping*
YAMADERA AYUMU
RECOGNISED BY THE TOYOTOMI ARMY DESPITE HIS YOUTH
A BRILLIANT PHYSICIANYOSHITSUGU: Hehehe… are you okay, Ayumu?

ŌTANI YOSHITSUGU
ISHIDA MITSUNARI’S ADVISER
SUFFERS FROM AN INCURABLE ILLNESSYOSHITSUGU: You’re the Toyotomi Army’s brilliant physician, but journeying to the battlefield makes you throw up.
AYUMU: Gyōbu-sama… I’m sorry.
(Gyōbu is his court rank, something akin to Minister of Justice)
YOSHITSUGU: Hehehe… it's fine. Your late father was also like that.
Parent and child often resemble each other, no doubt about it.
You will soon grow accustomed to corpses. Hehehe…

AYUMU: *sigh*
It’s been six months since I inherited my dead father’s work.
From when I was a child, he taught me about medicine. Because of that I’m used to seeing cadavers, but…
Watching my master, Mitsunari-sama, kill people always makes me feel sick.

ISHIDA MITSUNARI
TOYOTOMI HIDEYOSHI’S LEFT ARMIEYASU: Splendid as always. You killed the general single-handed, right?

IEYASU: As expected of the man known as Toyotomi’s left arm, Ishida Mitsunari.
TOKUGAWA IEYASU
TOKUGAWA ARMY GENERAL
TOYOTOMI SUBORDINATE IEYASU: Although you’ve been overdoing it lately.
Cutting the arms and legs off of dead people isn’t necessary, is it?
…Mitsunari?

KAKUNOSHIN: Stop it, Ieyasu.
Now matter how many times you tell him, it’s useless.
Hey, Mitsunari, since you’re here, how about showing a little respect for your comrades?
UKYŌ KAKUNOSHIN
UKYŌ ARMY GENERAL
EQUAL TO THE TOKUGAWA ARMY
TOYOTOMI SUBORDINATE

KAKUNOSHIN: You ignore our tactics, always acting alone.
You want all the glory for yourself, is that it?
IEYASU: Now, now, Ukyō-dono, Mitsunari just isn’t very sociable.
KAKUNOSHIN: Do you really believe that, Ieyasu?
You ought to know…
There’s talk of how, when he was a kid, he cut off his parents' heads and displayed them at the gates.

KAKUNOSHIN: Every soldier gathered here knows the rumours.
He likes killing people, so it's no surprise, right?
IEYASU: …You shouldn’t assume rumours about people are true, Ukyō-dono.
KAKUNOSHIN: How gullible you are.
This guy---

KAKUNOSHIN: …huh?

KAKUNOSHIN: *screams*
MY AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMMMM!!
YOSHITSUGU: Oh my, he did it again.

MITSUNARI: Whoever they may be…
I'll have the head of anyone who betrays us.
AYUMU: Mitsunari-sama doesn’t care about his enemies or his allies.
*wretches*
YOSHITSUGU: Him too, huh...?
HANBĒ: What's going on?
AYUMU: However…

TAKENAKA HANBĒ
TOYOTOMI’S GENIUS STRATEGIST
KNOWN AS THE GREATEST MIND OF THE SENGOKU ERA
HANBĒ: It’s unseemly, shouting like that.IEYASU: Hanbē-dono!
YOSHITSUGU: Apologies, Hanbē-sama. Mitsunari has once again…
KAKUNOSHIN: *panting*
HANBĒ: …Hideyoshi.
Mitsunari-kun has deprived another comrade of their arm.
AYUMU: However, Mitsunari-sama…

TOYOTOMI HIDEYOSHI
TOYOTOMI ARMY SUPREME GENERAL
THE MAN CLOSEST TO CONQUERING JAPAN
AYUMU: Under Hideyoshi-sama’s discerning gaze, he’s like a different person.
MITSUNARI: Hideyoshi-sama…!
SOLDIERS: Hideyoshi-sama. Hideyoshi-sama.

HIDEYOSHI: The Ukyō Army is an important asset in this war.
MITSUNARI: Understood...
I humbly beg your forgiveness, Hideyoshi-sama.
HIDEYOSHI: It’s not the time to be fighting amongst ourselves.
Success is just around the corner.
HANBĒ: Listen well! Right now we, the Toyotomi Army, led by Hideyoshi, are the ones closest to conquering the land.

HANBĒ: According to recent intelligence, Sanada Yukimura, who became commander of the Takeda Army after Takeda Shingen fell ill, has proven incapable of waging war and suffered an attack by the Hōjō Army.
And today the Boss of Ōshū’s Date Army was crushed by Mitsunari-kun.
Thus, the battle which divides the nation will be…
Hōjō versus Toyotomi.

HANBĒ: Mitsunari-kun, I expect you to take responsibility for Ukyō-kun’s missing arm.
MITSUNARI: Yes…certainly!
HANBĒ: Hideyoshi…
HIDEYOSHI: …Yeah.

HIDEYOSHI: Everyone, henceforth make preparations to depart for the front.
For the sake of the country’s future, turn towards this last decisive battle. A perfect system of government is at stake!
Ready your weapons, and grasp absolute victory!
SOLDIERS: Yes!

MITSUNARI: Hideyoshi-sama…

AYUMU: *phew*
IEYASU: How's Ukyō-dono doing?
AYUMU: Ieyasu-sama.

AYUMU: …Ah…his life is not in danger.
It will be about half a month before he’s able to move, I think.
IEYASU: I see… that’s good.
AYUMU: Ieyasu-sama is not like Mitsunari-sama.
He has a kind heart, and is trusted by his troops.
IEYASU: You’re a great doctor, Hashiru.
AYUMU: Ah…um, I’m Ayumu.
He may seem silly now and then, but…
IEYASU: Hm? Ayumu is it? Hahaha.
AYUMU: That man is like the Sun.
IEYASU: Sorry, it’s just that you’re always running, haha.
(A pun on Ayumu’s name, which sounds the same as the verb ‘to walk’)

AYUMU: Ah…excuse me. I’ll have to go and examine Gyōbu-sama soon…
IEYASU: Hey, Ayumu.
What do you think of Mitsunari?
AYUMU: Huh…?
IEYASU: A bloodthirsty murderer.
Is that what you think?

AYUMU: …I…
I think…
IEYASU: …It’s only natural to think that way…
Mitsunari is feared by everyone.
I’m sorry… please forget about it.
AYUMU: I think…!

AYUMU: When Hideyoshi-sama looks at Mitsunari-sama, at times I can tell how he feels.
The times when I think of Mitsunari-sama as a murderer are completely different.
…Surely…
There is something special between Mitsunari-sama and Hideyoshi-sama.

IEYASU: That’s…
AYUMU: Huh?
IEYASU: That’s a bond!
Mitsunari has also formed a bond!
AYUMU: A bond…

IEYASU: That guy definitely still has a human heart!
I know!
We’ll share a drink with Mitsunari!
AYUMU: …huh?

IEYASU: I have just the saké! Let’s go, Ayumu!
AYUMU: HUUH?!
Nooo! I’m fine! Don't involve me in this!
IEYASU: Hahaha! But didn’t you and I just have the same idea?
AYUMU: We did not! Sure, from time to time I’ve thought about that sort of thing…
But the fact remains that Mitsunari-sama is terrify-

AYUMU: *eek*
IEYASU: Ah!
AYUMU: *eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek* MITSUNARI-SAMA!!
IEYASU: Well, well, this is great, Mitsunari!
We were about to go looking for you.
Won't you have a drink with us?

MITSUNARI: Get out of my sight. I have nothing to discuss with the likes of you.
IEYASU: Ahaha, oh my, don’t say that.
It’s delicious... the saké, I mean-
MITSUNARI: I told you to disappear.

IEYASU: I see… in that case…
I’ll talk to the crow.

AYUMU: Ieyasu-sama…?
IEYASU: Have you ever spoken with a crow, Mitsunari?
I have.

IEYASU: There was a conflict some years ago, and I lay close to death.
‘Ah, it’s useless’ I thought. At that moment a crow landed nearby.
The crow stared back at me.
At first I thought it was waiting for me to die...
But then a voice echoed inside my head.
CROW: Will you end it here?

IEYASU: Ever since, when I see a crow I watch it closely...
As if waiting for it to speak to me.
Mitsunari…
Don’t you often watch the crows too?

CROW: What are you afraid of?

IEYASU: It looks like…
You and I are kindred spirits.
Hm?
Ahaha, that’s a ‘What are those two doing?’ kinda look.
Do you think I’m a bird tamer?

IEYASU: I just…
Want to form a bond with you, that’s all.

MITSUNARI: Bonds…you say...?
How sickening!

MITSUNARI: This is the Sengoku Era, yet you still believe in that sort of thing?
IEYASU: …I do.
Bonds…are the most powerful thing of all…that’s what I believe.
Mitsunari, they have the power to change you too.
MITSUNARI: …hmph.

MITSUNARI: My…only reality…is…
“Despair”.
You can’t help me.
I don’t need anyone’s help.

MITSUNARI: With this sword I shall teach the meaning of despair.
SOLDIER: Mitsunari-sama! Ieyasu-sama!

SOLDIER: We have a crisis! Hōjō’s ninja are attacking!
They should already be…!
AYUMU: *eek*

AYUMU: Ieyasu-sama…!
IEYASU: Dammit…
At a time like this…
MITSUNARI: Ah, perfect…

MITSUNARI: Ieyasu, why don’t you preach about bonds to these men?
Can you demonstrate that power?
Will they be reduced to tears and cast aside their swords?

MITSUNARI: I’ll prove to you…

MITSUNARI: That all humans bow down...
In the face of despair.

AYUMU: Even though I said that watching Mitsunari-sama kill people makes me sick…
At that time, for some reason, I couldn’t turn away.
Blood spurted and fell like heavy rain…
The crows swarmed around Mitsunari-sama in search of carrion…

AYUMU: He looked…
So beautiful, like an angel.

AYUMU: Mitsunari-sama wasn’t mistaken.
MITSUNARI: Only you remain.
AYUMU: This is the Sengoku Era. We have no choice but to fight for our survival.
NINJA: Please, wait! I give up! I surrender!
Please don’t kill me!
*screams*

MITSUNARI: You opposed Hideyoshi-sama…!
Death would be a kindness!
NINJA: *screams*
AYUMU: Stop this, I beg you! Mitsunari-sama!
Huh?
…ah…

AYUMU: *screams*
What am I doing?
MITSUNARI: You’re…from before…
If you interfere, boy, then I'll cut you down.
AYUMU: *eek*
Hideyoshi-sama…

AYUMU: Don’t Hideyoshi-sama and Mitsunari-sama share a bond?!
*eek*…When Hideyoshi-sama looks at…Mi…Mitsunari-sama, he…
Ah…um…um…
What am I saying...?
So…Sorry…! I’m…!

MITSUNARI: It’s as you said, boy.
AYUMU: Huh?
MITSUNARI: I owe Hideyoshi-sama everything…
My life belongs to Hideyoshi-sama.
That day…it was Hideyoshi-sama who saved me...

MITSUNARI: That day…
It was Hideyoshi-sama who guided me.

MITSUNARI: Boy.
Your name is?
AYUMU: A…ah…
Ya…Yamadera…Ayumu…
It’s Ayumu…!
MITSUNARI: Ayumu, huh…
IEYASU: Mitsu…nari…

MITSUNARI: Ayumu, there was one more lesson that I learned from Hideyoshi-sama. I’ll show you…
That in these turbulent times, there is something only those with power are able to grant.

MITSUNARI: That is “despair”.

AYUMU: Mitsu…nari-sama?
Why?
IEYASU: Mitsunari…
NINJA: Stop…
AYUMU: Why? Is this also for Hideyoshi-sama?
NINJA: *eek*
Stop it…!

NINJA: STOP-!
MITSUNARI: Heheheh…
Hahaha…

MITSUNARI: Hahaha!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
AYUMU: On his back, once again…

AYUMU: I saw white wings.
Blood spurted and fell like heavy rain…
The crows swarmed around Mitsunari-sama in search of carrion…

MITSUNARI: In Hideyoshi-sama’s name…!
AYUMU: The Mitsunari-sama who showed despair was…
Like an angel, absolutely beautiful.

There we have it! There are two more chapters in this volume, and since I've already completed the translation for Chapter 2, it will probably be up before too long.
