Red Dawn

Jul 03, 2011 05:18

It’s late when the storm hits. A hot wind howls through the Keep rattling doorways and shutters. The cloud quickly blots out the stars and smothers the whole castle. Anyone caught outside when it hits will suffer severe wind-burn, and must hurry to get inside into clearer air or risk suffocating.

The front lasts no more than half an hour and then it’s gone, leaving only dust behind. It swirls and eddies and settles on windowsills and in the corners of doorways. It blankets paths and creeps between cracks. It isn’t long before everything indoors is lined in a dirty red film.

Meanwhile, outside, the day dawns blood-red, as though fire and smoke had descended upon the Keep. But it’s no hotter than any other day, and the only smell in the air is the bone dry smell of stale dirt. Any who venture outside will find it difficult if not impossible to breathe. Most of the common buildings have been closed up against the mess. The animals have been pulled into the stables and kennels. There are no staff to be found.
