Vanyel Ashkevron | Elegante CR (continued) magics_pawn December 30 2011, 04:13:04 UTC
If nothing else, that terrible wrenching feeling of half of Vanyel's soul being ripped away sure woke him out of his magic-drained stupor. But what happened next was just as bad when the Portal spell collapsed upon the death of the mage that had cast it. Normally such a spell would vent all its waste energy into the ground by default, but in this case it had another, easier route open to it; venting right back through Vanyel himself. The traumatic brain injury was like burning open a multitude of magical orifices and cauterizing them there. It's never known if Vanyel would have developed such powerful Gifts on his own as he grew but at that point Vanyel acquired a dozen or more psychic abilities and that all-important mage-gift to go with them. Needless to say it was the most painful thing his body or mind could endure and only the shock the adults felt at the death of Tylendel gave him the opening to run off and try to drown himself.

Fifteen years old, and that would have been the end of him, but then Yfandes showed up.

The only thing anyone really knew about Yfandes before she and Vanyel became Companion and Herald was that she had gone her entire life, grown into the prime of her life without taking anyone as her Chosen Herald- something that was considered extremely unusual. It's implied by that that she may have had foreknowledge that Vanyel or someone very like him was coming along, but in Vanyel's hour of need she showed up, did her best to stabilize both his mental state and special abilities, and that was, as far as she was concerned, that.

The months afterward were steadily horrible, involving Vanyel being disowned by his father, Vanyel's uncontrollable gifts and incredible trauma rocking the entire capitol city on its foundations and at least one good suicide attempt before Savil threw up her hands and took him to the only people she knew who could help- the K'treva. These are a particular little group that were part of a larger group calling themselves the Tayledras, who considered themselves the magical (and otherwise) caretakers of the wild Pelagir mountains. Two of these were Savil's oldest friends a man named Starwind and his lover and student Starwind, both of whom took in Vanyel, healed him up and taught him how to not accidentally break every goddamn magical thing he came into contact with. With their help he came to understand why he'd want to be a Herald int he first place and learned of his own inner courage and will to do right- proving Yfandes' Choice to be completely in the right. She'd judged him, even in the depth of his agony, to be a Good Person, capable of becoming the ind of paragon of justice and duty and doing right that a Herald needs to be- and she was right.
