6. Personality: Charles is an optimist. You have never met a more optimistic guy. He's very calm, at ease with the world. He doesn't tend to get riled up easily, preferring to solve conflicts with discussion and debate rather than pounding things with his fists. He firmly believes that, one day, humans and mutants will coexist in peace. Even the events on the beach in the end of the film don't seem to dampen this belief. He'll do his part, whatever he must, in order to see that peace. He believes with all his heart that it will come about one day.
He cares very deeply for people, especially those he considers friends, family, or students. He was born, it seems, to be a teacher, as he has a gift -- not in the mutation sense -- for helping his fellow mutants reach their potential. He wants what's best for each of them, going to far as to allow Raven to leave with Erik in the end, because it was what she wanted, what she felt was right. But, even so, he feels the need to help push certain people down the path he feels is best -- especially in the case of Erik.
While he does want what's best for people, it's him who chooses what's best. In Raven's case, he decided she would be better off if no one ever saw her blue-self, and thus pushed her in that direction, going so far as to inform her that her disguises were better than her real self. He scolded Raven for revealing her natural eye color once, telling her that while a small slip was one thing, a bigger one, one that revealed her to the world, did "not bear thinking about".
There is a good chunk of arrogance that factors into many, if not all, of his decisions, especially where his sister is concerned. That arrogance tends to blind him to how he treats her, and how his blatant disregard for her desire to be accepted as she is affects her. He knows what's best for her, so of course her own feelings don't factor in. While he believes in peace and all that, he also believes he's right 99% of the time. And acts accordingly.
Despite the occasional bad pickup line, or several, he is usually witty, and highly intelligent. Which is understandable, considering his educational background. It appears he enjoys chess, alcohol both classy and non, and being vain about his hair. Unfortunately, without the ability to "read" peoples' minds, he's actually pretty bad at understanding them. He relies heavily on this ability to relate to others. Take it away, and he just sort of flounders.
Therefore, he really has no qualms about using his skill when and where it suits him. He'll read the mind of whoever he likes, alter their memories, and their decisions. He made the CIA agent -- the one who provided the facility -- do exactly what he wanted, and didn't think twice about it. And, if one thinks about it, how else was he able to sneak a blue, shapechanging girl into his family, if he didn't go in and screw around with the minds of his parents and other family members? He is never shown to feel guilty or uneasy about this decision. One could argue that he wasn't close with his family, and thus it made the choice easier, but, in the end, he actively chose to pop in and redecorate his parents' brains to suit his own purpose. It's not unreasonable to assume this is true for others as well. Granted, he'll probably be polite about it, to your face, but he'll still jump in your head and rearrange things if he feels it's necessary.
