Soon after closing Kingdom Hearts, Riku was brought to Castle Oblivion, where he was made to face the darkness within him. As he made his way through each basement he confronted his past, all his shortcomings and his newfound fears of the darkness. Although those he met were of no mind to help him do anything but succumb to the darkness once again, they forced him to accept his past for what it was and face his fears. And whenever he faltered, two valuable allies helped him out-King Mickey, first off, who helped him to fight against Ansem’s spirit when it resurfaced, and Naminé. Naminé, under the guise of Kairi, appeared to Riku and told him that “there’s no power that can defeat you-not the light, not the dark.” She helped Riku to see that he needn’t fear the darkness, that he could use its power without giving in to its temptations. With her encouragement he was able to use his darkness to find his way out of an illusion of light.
On the next floor he (formally) met the man known as DiZ, who had been guiding him through the first few basements. DiZ directed him to find the real Naminé, who explained to him that she could suppress his darkness for him, if he wished it… but as Riku realized, it would mean forgetting everything that had happened to him, as well. He chose to keep his memories and face Ansem head-on, finally emerging victorious.
Upon leaving Castle Oblivion, Riku met up with DiZ once more, the other man forcing upon him yet another choice: the road to light, or the road to darkness. “Neither suits me,” Riku said, striding past him. “I’m taking the middle path.”
“Do you mean the twilight road to nightfall?”
“No. It’s the road to dawn.”
Since then, Riku has been on a new journey. He’s trying to help to fix the disasters that he still feels he wrought, working with DiZ and Naminé to protect Sora as he sleeps. They’ve caught wind of two Nobodies in particular (Nobodies being the shell cast off when a heart is stolen by the Heartless) that seem to have a connection to Sora-Riku was sent out to retrieve one of them, Xion, and tracked her to Destiny Islands, where she fell into a nightmare. Riku was holding her, and she seemed to be waking up…
And then he was waking up himself, in the Keep.
6. Personality: Riku used to be king of the world. Then he fell off.
No, really.
Riku has changed a lot from his first steps outside of Destiny Islands. Where he once used to be arrogant, he’s now a lot more humble. While on Destiny Islands, he was the one who could do no wrong, he made some major mistakes after arriving in Hollow Bastion, and he’s realized this. So Riku’s a little more tentative than he once was, willing to take a little bit more time to assess the situation than to act recklessly like he first did. But although he’s changed a lot, there are some things that haven’t changed a bit.
Riku is very forthright. He doesn’t like a lot of fluff, and prefers things to be straightforward. He tends to see things in black and white a lot of the time-Sora abandoned him and so was his enemy. Attempting to exploit the darkness ended badly for him, so any and all forms of darkness are his enemy, even though he still has darkness within his own heart-that sort of thing. Recently he’s been learning to see the various shades of gray inbetween, but he’s still more likely to try and pigeonhole things. Going along with this, Riku is also very shortsighted. He tends not to think about the consequences of his actions, which has backfired on him multiple times and left him completely alone in his own world. He’s learning to think about what repercussions his actions bring, but will still leap into action without a thought if the situation is dire enough.
