13. Writing sample - Third Person Prose: (Recycled!) It was cold here. That was the first thing Odette realized when she opened her eyes. She turned in a circle, to survey her new surroundings. Her webbed feet paddled expertly in the water, as if she had been doing this her entire life. She shivered, her feathers rustling as she did so. Why was it so cold? She looked down, gazing at her reflection in the water.
This was the first time she had ever seen herself...this way. She had known, when Rothbart captured her and brought her here, that something was different. She just didn't realize how different. Still, seeing herself with the feathers and wings and beak wasn't a surprised. He would do such a thing.
But this still did not compare to the hurt Derek had inflicted on her. She knew he loved her. But she had needed to hear the reasons. What did he love? Besides her beauty. Would he even bother to look for her? He had seen the look on his face, when she left with her father. But did it really mean he had wanted her to stay? Or was that just wishful thinking. No, she would not think like that. She would hold her high and would hope for the very best. Derek did love her. She could feel it down in her heart. He would come for her. This much she was sure of.
She could hear footsteps and turned to see the source. It was Rothbart. And he whistling. Of all the nerve! Her brow furrowed and she refused the bread crumbs his assistant was sprinkling across the water. He chided her and she turned away from them.
“Come now, Odette,” she heard him say and she looked back to see what he wanted. “There is only one way you can fix this.” He adjusted the crown on his head and she looked away, furious. Odette snapped at his hand as he reached out to pet her head. “Temper, temper, Missy,” he wagged a finger at her, “It would not be a good idea to bite the hand that feeds you, now would it?”
“Derek is going to find me,” she replied and swam to the lake's center.
“Good. Let him. I'll welcome him with open arms.” He chuckled. “That's if he doesn't think you're dead and went and pledged his love to another.”
She deflated, resting her beak on her chest. He probably thought she was dead.
The whole kingdom probably thought she was dead. And as long as she was like this, she was as good as.
14. Writing sample - First Person Prose: This is not...where am I?
[The journal shifts in Odette's hands while she's taking the time to examine her surroundings.]
This is not the Golden Shore. Phoenix, can you hear me? Anyone? Mimmi? Hello?
Where am I?
[Distress in her voice, can you hear it?]
Answer me!
[A pause and finally:]
Not again. Please not again.
15. Tattoo: On her shoulder as a human and on the underside of her wing as a swan.
