Well there is, of course, the Duomo (Domo) and the Baptistry (Battistero) in front of it. The Domo is generally free to go into but the Battistero is 6 or 8 Euro, I believe. Florence is pretty small, so I'd just do some walking around. My favorite places to go were the Palazzo Vecchio, which you will be right next to, and the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) which you will be very near. The bars and clubs I went to were all either gay bars or gay-friendly, so I'm not sure how appropriate they would be for you or your mother... Are you looking for advice on food places? Piazza della Repubblica has some good ones, though they are a little pricey. Oh! And there is an Irish Pub near Piazza Repubblica on Via Pellicceria. They have some very creative names for their drinks and they speak english. Try their version of a White Russian, if you get a chance! Most any food place is good in Florence, so again I'd just walk around and see what you see. There are usually stands and little markets up everywhere, most notably right next to La Chiesa di San Lorenzo where there is a daily market from 9am-6/7pm - which is the area where my school was located. There a lots of little shops in that area too. Avoid the gypsys if you can. They are not bad people, but they will pickpocket you if given the chance. There are usually also people selling things (like paintings and sunglasses) on blankets and off of cardboard boxes. They are very high priced, so haggle if you can, but also note that it is illegal for them to be selling and you should watch for cops (carabinieri) when you buy from them.

That's all I can relay for now. If you have any other questions, let me know and have a great trip!!
