Sinead rubbed her eyes, feeling tired as she put her homework back into her school bag. She turned her computer on to check her email before going to bed. There were three in her inbox. Two junk mails and one from Aisling with no subject.
Deleting the junk mail she opened the e-mail from Aisling. Her jaw dropped, she couldn’t believe what she was reading. She read the same line three times before it sunk in slightly.
‘Sinead, Mum knows about us...’
Her head spun, they didn’t agree to tell their mothers so how did Eva know? Sinead yawned and realised that if she stayed up any longer she may pass out. She went and said goodnight to her mother before crawling into bed.
Her mind wouldn’t stop working no matter how tired she was. She laid there thinking of how Eva found out. ‘I know Aisling didn’t tell her, she would have told me first if she planned on telling her mum. I’m going to have to speak with her tomorrow at school and find out what happened. I hope Eva doesn’t tell my mum. If my mum found out crap would hit the roof. I might try and get to school early tomorrow to speak with Aisling. We don’t have first two periods together and I really don’t want to wait until recess but I may have to.’
Sinead woke late the next morning; she made it to school just in time to hear the bell for first period ring. ‘Crap, looks like I’m not going to be able to speak with Aisling until recess,’ she thought as she made her way to her first class.
Sitting in a double period of geography first thing in the morning, the small brunette didn’t like it all. She sat up the back of the classroom by herself and listened to the teacher. In front of her sat two new students, twins, who she didn’t care to get to know. Sinead knew she had to pay attention and not let her thoughts wonder; last time she did that she ended up unintentionally ignoring the teacher and got herself two days worth of lunch time detentions.
Class went by surprisingly quickly for her and before she knew it the bell for recess rang. She made her way down the corridors and waited outside the front of Aisling’s class. She had double computers. She could see the figure of the teacher standing in front of the closed door, not letting the students out. She could hear voices being raised and the teacher yelling at them to be quiet because they weren’t going anywhere.
‘Just great, the one day I really need to speak to my girlfriend, I end up late to school, we don’t have first two classes together and now she’s being kept inside a classroom for recess. I think the world may be against me today,’ Sinead thought to herself as she walked into the courtyard and sat down, eating her recess while waiting for Aisling to come out.
The bell rang for third period and Aisling came out of the computer room after all of the other students had left.
“Hey Aisling, you okay?” Sinead asked, noting a difference in her girlfriend.
“Yeah, I just got stuck in a room with both Kelsey and Brooke for two periods and recess. Wasn’t the best thing to have happen first thing in the morning; it sucked.”
“That would,” Sinead replied patting her shoulder as they walked to their next class, English, which they had together.
When they got to the room both Kelsey and Brooke were already there talking with a group of boys.
“Oh and if it isn’t the lesbo’s,” Brooke mocked at them.
“If anyone here is a lesbian Brooke, it would be you and Kelsey, look at you hanging off her all the time. Get a room, no one wants to see your stupid face or hear your pathetic attempts at bullying,” Aisling said, already annoyed at the blonde.
The boys in the class started to laugh at Brooke and agree with what Aisling said. Brooke grabbed Kelsey and dragged her off, knocking down a few of the guys that were close to her.
“Brooke is turning into such an idiot,” Sinead said, watching the blonde power-walk away.
“Turning? I thought she already was one.”
They had been waiting outside the classroom for ten minutes before a substitute teacher showed up and let them into the classroom. The teacher seemed to be in her mid to late twenties, thin, fair skinned, bright light brown eyes, brown hair, Angelina Jolie type lips and glasses. She wore a white blouse which was neatly tucked into a black pencil skirt. All the boy’s jaws dropped when they saw her.
Taking their seats, they got out their homework and waited for it to be collected. The new teacher who they had never met before seemed to come from America and was rather nice to look at. Her accent was thick as she introduced herself to the class as Miss Franklin.
After getting the class to quieten down rather easily she collected the homework for their normal teacher, Mrs. Fitzpatrick, and started to mark the attendance roll, noticing there were only 15 students in the class. She excused herself in advanced if she pronounced any of their names wrong and asked them to tell her how to properly pronounce it, normally first and then slowly.
“Kai-nar McKenna.”
“Kyna, Key-nah,” said a blonde girl who Sinead recognised as one of the twins from geography.
“Sin-add Mul-cay-ee”
“Sinead Mulcahy. Shi-nade Mul-car-he,” replied the brunette, use to most substitutes not being able to pronounce her name correctly.
“Eyes-ling Pendergast.”
“Aisling, Ash-ling.”
“Brooke Sinner.”
“Kelsey Whelan.”
“Desmond Blacksmith.”
“Isaac Griffin.”
“David McAlister.”
“Lorcan McKenna,” the teacher said. “Are you and Kyna siblings?”
“Twins Ma’am,” the blonde boy said, sitting next to his sister.
“Colm O’Brien.”
“Aidan O’Riley.”
“Sea-mus O’Shea.”
“Seamus, Shay-mus.”
“Colin Sheehan.”
“Davin Walsh.”
“Miles Ward.”
The teacher finished marking the role and put it aside. “Do any of you know if Brooke, Kelsey and Isaac are here today or actually at home?”
“Isaac’s at home, he got pretty beaten up at soccer yesterday,” Davin replied.
“Brooke and Kelsey are here today, they’re just skipping class,” Aisling said, smirking.
“Yeah, they are. Brooke was being a bitch and got out bitched so she walked off sulking with Kelsey, knocked me over as well,” Desmond added.
“I’ll make a note that they are skipping class, thank you for informing me,” Miss Franklin said, standing up and picking up the pile of worksheets for them to do this lesson.
The class went by quickly and the bell rang for period four. Sinead and Aisling collected their belongings and headed for their favourite class.
“Miss Franklin seemed nice,” Sinead said, avoiding walking into other students.
“She did, and best of all, she may get Brooke into trouble. I really don’t like Brooke,” Aisling said, still annoyed by having to deal with her for most of the day.
“Don’t look now but guess who’s coming to class?”
“Oh God, can’t she just like vanish for the rest of the day.”
Brooke and Kelsey walked past the students to the end of the line. Brooke purposely bumped into Aisling, snickering as Aisling stumbled back a bit. Luckily Sinead was there to keep her steady.
“I swear I’m going to teach her a lesson sooner or later. My patience and temper are very limited at times,” Aisling said, glaring at Brooke.
“Ais, you have way better things to do, don’t let her get to you, just ignore her,” Sinead said, giving her hand a quick squeeze.
The teacher opened the door and let them file in and take a seat. She walked around in front of them, waiting for them to get settled. Sinead noticed the pile of folders on the desk in front of the teacher and recognised them to be their assignments.
“It looks like she marked our assignments,” Sinead whispered to Aisling.
“It does, I hope we got a good mark,” Aisling replied, trying to find their one in the pile.
“Now that you are all settled, I’m going to hand you back your assignments. Some of you did very well and some of you very poorly. Some of you even had the hide to cheat.”
Mrs. Steele picked up the first three assignments and handed them out, all of them getting a C. The next four she handed out all got a B grade.
“I would like to congratulate both Sinead and Aisling and Kyna and Lorcan on getting full marks, well done to the four of you,” she happily said, handing them back their assignments.
“We done an awesome job, I can’t believe we got full marks,” Sinead whispered so no one but Aisling could hear her.
“Now, Brooke and Kelsey, your assignment was pathetic. How dare you both have the hide to copy everything out of a text book, especially one which I co-wrote! I’ve sent a letter home to your parents telling them of this. You also have a week worth of after school detention cleaning the playground. Both of you need to report to the principal’s office now where you will both be put on a behaviour monitoring card.”
“Looks like all that Brooke can do is bully, cheat and lie,” Sinead whispered to Aisling, “You were right.”
“What did you just say?” Brooke said, glaring at Sinead.
“It’s none of your business what she said, Brooke. Maybe you should be listening to Mrs. Steele and go to the principal’s office instead of wondering how much fun of you we’re making back here,” Aisling said smugly.
“Aisling, that’s enough. Brooke, Kelsey, leave my classroom now.”
History went by rather uneventfully for the rest of the period. The bell rang for lunch and Sinead and Aisling packed up their bags and headed to the back of the oval for the hour long break.
Sitting down they took out their lunches and Sinead asked Aisling what she had been dying to ask her all day.
“Hey, Aisling, what did you mean in your e-mail last night? Did you mum actually find out about us?”
Swallowing her mouthful of food, Aisling responded. “Yeah, Mum was cleaning up yesterday and when she went down into the basement she found a little piece of paper I was doodling on the night before while we were talking on the phone. It kind of gave it away. When I got home yesterday Mum had tea and biscuits waiting, I knew something was up and then she asked me about it, if we were more than just friends, and I couldn’t lie to her. She didn’t seem too impressed with the idea but as long as I’m happy, she’s happy. She just wants what is best for me, no matter what it is. She just asked that I give her some time to fully grasp the fact that I like girls.”
“Wow, I can’t believe she asked you about it. She won’t tell my mum, will she?” Sinead asked, feeling the panic rise inside of her.
“Sinead, calm down, she said she won’t tell yet.”
“Won’t tell yet? Which basically means if we don’t tell my mum sooner or later, Eva will; oh God. I’m doomed!”
“Sinead, calm down, please. It won’t be as bad as you think. I’ll just speak to my mum again tonight and ask what she meant by it,” Aisling said, taking Sinead’s hand in her own and gently running her thumb across the top of it.
“Okay, I just really don’t want Mum to know. You haven’t heard her rant about how all of us homosexuals are sick and we need to be cured. She went to a private Catholic school and it was drilled into her head from like a child. She hasn’t mentioned that though in about three years. Lately it’s just her shaking her head at the television or newspaper. I really don’t know what to think any more about her and the subject.”
“You know, you are going to have to tell her sooner or later. It’s not something you can hide forever.”
“I know and I really hate hiding it from her and everyone. All I want to do is just be able to kiss and hold you whenever I want without someone making stupid remarks and telling us that it’s wrong.
“One day we’ll get that, it just won’t be now. If we’re patient enough, it will all happen in good time.”
The two brunettes finished their lunch and talked for a while before the bell for fifth period rang. They had double science together. Entering the open classroom, they took their usual spot up the back on the left hand side.
Their teacher, Mr. Victor, walked in and stood in front of the class.
“Today since we have a double, we’ll be learning how to dissect a frog and then we’ll write up a report on what we find.”
“Eww! I’m not dissecting anything,” Brooke said, looking disgusted.
“Brooke, quiet please. Remember you are on a behaviour card, do you want me to write down that you’re not following instructions?”
Brooke sneered and went quiet letting the teacher continue.
“You have two choices to do today, you can either do the class work assigned or head to the library and help the librarian with covering books in contact.”
Aisling put her hand in the air before anyone in the class had time to react.
“Yes, Aisling?”
“Sinead and I would like to go help the librarian, Sir.”
“Okay then, you two can go help her now, tell her I sent you.”
They grabbed their school bags and left the class, getting out of there as quickly as possible.
“I’m so glad we didn’t have to dissect anything, that seems horrible,” Sinead said, entering the library.
They got to work with helping the librarian and before they knew it, they bell ending the school day rang. Collecting their bags, they headed off home through the park.
Walking through the thick woody area of the park they came out near the clearing and saw both Brooke and Kelsey waiting.
“Took you two lesbians long enough to arrive,” Brooke said, mockingly.
“Can you not come up with anything better than ‘lesbian’?” Sinead asked.
“Why should I, lesbian? Wait, you’re actually more of a midget lesbian, than a normal lesbian.”
“Shut up, Brooke,” Aisling said, glaring at her for the fifth time today.
“She doesn’t have to,” Kelsey spoke up, Brooke nodding her head in approval.
“Kelsey, shut up and go back to kissing Brooke’s arse,” Sinead said, getting really annoyed at the two of them; sticking up for herself which didn’t happen often.
Brooke glared at Sinead before running at her full force intending to knock her over. Aisling saw what the blonde was trying to do and stuck her foot out, tripping her before she could touch Sinead.
Brooke fell to the floor with a bang. She picked herself up and went for Aisling while Kelsey cheered her on. Aisling ducked out of the way making Brooke even angrier at her.
Aisling could feel the anger boil hot in her veins and before she knew what she was doing her fist made contact with Brooke’s face. The blonde screeched in pain and stumbled backward. Her hands went to her face and covered her nose which was bleeding.
“If you ever come near or make fun of Sinead or I again, you’ll be getting a lot worse than a bloody nose,” Aisling spat at Brooke as Sinead dragged her away from them.
When they were a far enough distance away from the park, Sinead pulled Aisling into one of the alleyways.
“Are you alright?” she asked, worried.
“I’m good, I don’t know what came over me though,” Aisling said, rubbing her right hand.
“I can’t believe you hit Brooke.”
“I can’t either; it felt so good though.”
“It would have but please don’t do it again. I don’t want to think about what Brooke would do to you if you did,” Sinead said, giving Aisling a hug.
“I won’t,” Aisling said, giving Sinead a quick kiss on the lips. “Let’s go home now.”
