June 7th is Daniel Boone day!
Okay, so some of you are probably thinking, who the heck is Daniel Boone?
Well, here's the wiki on him. Mostly, I get him confused with Davy Crockett. (Not because of any kind of history reason, but because I was raised on Disney and the same guy who played Crockett later played Boone. This also fed into my childhood belief that all mountain men wore coonskin caps. (And also, that our local video rental place had a LOT of old Disney flicks in their kids section...))
But, tl;dr version: Boone is the archetypal frontiersman.
He was the hero of dime novels and the central character in many tall tales (most of which, apparently made his family roll their collective eyes as a great many of the tales were not based on reality). He became the symbol for the 'natural man' who rejected civilization in favor of living in the untamed wild.
People like Boone captured everyone's imaginations because they explored the unknown. They shed the trappings of the comfortable world because it either didn't fit them or because they felt there was more out there to be seen. It doesn't matter what genre you pick, because there's always some part of a character's world that can be discovered with adventures to be had.
So, you know, go out and explore some uncivilized worlds. ;3
