In the aftermath of this disaster I have become numb even though I wasn’t there. The images on the news and how horrible people were treated was enough for me. Kanye West was quoted saying that, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people,” on NBC’s Hurricane Relief Program. I am glad that many of the famous Hip-Hop, and national African-American leaders are stepping up in the aftermath of this storm. I believe that the hurricane shows how unorganized our country is and how many people are hurt economically from the past four years. It is my opinion that when most of the people that are left behind are a certain race then it becomes a race issue. I’m not saying that I totally agree with Kanye’s comments but when people go without food or water like a third world country then the question comes into mind. When 9/11 happened the government and officials seemed so organized and helped as many as they could. After seven days the people in New Orleans and the surrounding areas were finally getting some type of aid or word from the government. The people in the trade towers and the pentagon on 9/11 were mainly white and very affluent. Theses same people that taxes are helping while the poor continue to grow and get poorer. An all our president can do in this situation is state facts that everyone already knows, and takes candid pictures with black starving children. The hurricane is just an eye opener for all those people that live in the suburbs and never get out to the cities. Even though I haven’t cried in days I think that one of these days I’m going to break down. I’m just happy that I’m alive….forget about the football games, and homecoming. Some things are more important.
