Oh my god, this episode. I'm seeing a lackluster response to it, but it's a character piece, which guarantees love from me. Which, unsurprising if you've read my writing :p.
I'm actually having a hard time putting my words in order, so we're going with bullet points.
- "Don't talk to me when I'm cross!" :)
- Okay, the Doctor falling all over the place in this episode is hilarious. I could watch Matt Smith move all day, seriously. One of my favorite parts of watching each new episode is wondering how he's going to move next.
- And I really love how Eleven plays with the sonic screwdriver. He does it quite a bit throughout the series, flipping it on and off when it's not needed, pointing/sonicing people for emphasis, that sort of thing.
- Some interesting color play. Red for the TARDIS dream, blue for the future dream except for the red van that brought them back to the TARDIS. There might be more to catch on a rewatch too.
- Am I missing something or were there no cracks or silence this time? That's a surprise.
- The fact that the Doctor's nightmare is Amy settled down with a husband and child? Very telling. He's still desperately in need of companionship.
- And could Rory please stop being insecure? You are more awesome than that, I know it.
- And in the end the Doctor willfully gives up control, literally handing over the keys. That's not something we see very often, if at all. I can't speak for Classic Who, but no moments from the new series spring to mind.
And the two things that kill me:
In the beginning on the bench, I keep hearing the Doctor say "What do you do to stave off the...y'know...self harm" which implies an interesting desperation to the way the Doctor travels. In fact, I'm seeing desperation from the Doctor all through this episode. If I am mishearing, please let me know. I would love to be wrong about this.
And "There's only one person in the universe who hates me as much as you do" and the amount of self loathing this implies for the Doctor.
Yeah... I'm just going to leave those there. I'm sure someone else will take them apart and then I can read about it without getting too close.
