WHEN: 'Alive Without Breath, Cold As Death'; Sunday, January 16th, 2009; 11:58 AM WHERE: Great Hall WHO: Chance-- and anyone else who wants to poke the blob of melancholy
Aleesha strolled into the Great Hall, looking for one of her favourites to keep her company. She didn't mind which one, as long as it was someone she genuinely liked. She managed to find her absolute favourite on the first sweep over. Weaving her way through bodies and tables, Leesh had almost reached him when he let out an audible grumle and she stopped short.
Bugger, he was in one of those moods. She hadn't considered he mightn't be all that fun today. He normally was but she did recognise the sound of a woeful boy, none so more as her woeful boy.
She raised her eyebrows for just a second, considering, before she decided that she would join him.
Al drummed her hands loudly on the table, as an announcement of her presence. "What's the hap, my handsome friend? Why so blue?"
Jules walked into the Great Hall and breathed in deeply. It may not be exactly like the wonderful smell of the outdoors, but it was enough for this morning. Speaking of which, she needed to figure out who to drag outside into the cold for a nice smoke. Where was Bacchus when you needed him, eh?
She immediately lost that train of thought when she spotted Aleesha with a morose looking Chance. What had happened to him?! Had something happened to someone else? What was wrong?!
Weaving between the tables, she quickly made it to the table and sat down next to Chance while tugging a piece of hair behind her ear. She smiled up at Aleesha, winking at her as a sign of hello, before turning her attention to Chance.
"Hey Chance, what's wrong?" She glanced down at his book, "Arithmancy got you down?"
To be honest, Chance was about to slide off of his seat and collapse onto the floor before the two girls seemed to pop out of nowhere. Luckily they did, or else there might've been a disaster! Chance lifted his head from his crossed arms and sent guilty looks at both Jules and Leesh.
Oh jeez, could he really tell them? He didn't really like to bend the truth unless he was getting some personal benefit out of it, but this time it would make him feel worse.
Chance managed to flash a tired smile at them, though.
"Hey, girlies," he greeted, shutting his heavy book shut. Arithmancy wasn't going to help him any, was it? Smirking, he chuckled at Jules' suggestion. "Urgh, Arithmancy always has me down, doesn't it?"
Well. That didn't sound very convincing, did it?
"I think I just get dumber every day," Chance laughed.
Al blew an air kiss to her best gal-pal in return for her wink. She loved the girl dearly and wished her own sister was more like Jules. She was fun and funky and didn't get grumpy nearly as much as Olivia did. Chance's mood should automatically improve with two awesome (and Aleesha would be so bold as to say beautiful) girls sitting on either side of him. But it didn't
( ... )
"Dear sweet lil ole me?" Jules gasped in mock horror at Aleesha's accusation. "I would never hit Chancey-poo."
Smiling innocently, she looked at Chance and batted her eyelashes playfully, "Right?"
Though she had hit him quite a few times if she did remember correctly, with a few misses her and there on her off days. But friendships come second in Quidditch games in Jules' mind. Besides he knew that she still adored him! Just like she adored bashing Bacchus from time to time.
"You know what Leesha? I think Chance needs some time away from Arithmancy. Maybe some fun, eh? Personally I could use some fresh air and snow, the indoors are starting to make me a bit stir crazy to tell you the truth," she laughed while looking up at her best friend.
Chance simply grinned at Jules and leaned his forehead against hers. "O' course, Jules. You'd never hit me too hard, right? And besides, I'm sneaky enough to dodge those crazy Bludgers of yours!"
He chucked and poked the Hufflepuff girl on the nose before reaching over to shut his giant Arithmancy book.
"And what do you have against Quidditch, you weirdo?" Chance laughed, punching Leesh softly on the shoulder. "You know, I bet if you gave it a chance, you'd probably be really good at it!"
Playfully, he stuck his tongue out at his best friend before chuckling over the idea. It was true, though! Leesh would make a crazy good chaser, or even a beater if she had an enemy on her mind... Though, they did want the rival teams to live...
But the idea of going outside didn't sound like a bad idea, anyway. Chance nodded his head at the girls.
"I could use some time away from Arithmancy... Get my mind off of things, y'know?"
"Snow, cold, fresh, yes yes, I think he needs it all," she replied, almost absentmindedly.
She watched Chance tilt his forehead to Jules' and Aleesha cocked her head, an idea forming. Why hadn't she ever considered getting them together? They were both the fun, outgoing sort, they'd have a ton of fun together. Chance would definitely treat Jules with respect and Jules was definitely not the sort to break his heart intentionally, although she did have a thing for bad boys, didn't she? Chance didn't exactly fit that profile but he pulled pranks and stuff, he had to get points for that.
It took a second for Leesh to realise she was being spoken to. "Honey," she said, in the most obnoxiously playful way, "if I played Quidditch I'd be great at it. Just thank Merlin we'd be on the same team, otherwise I might go after you and it would be such a shame to break that pretty face. Don't you agree he's rather good looking, Jules?" Oh, she wasn't subtle in the slightest, was she
( ... )
Jules scrunched her nose as Chance poked it and shook her head. Well now that made her want to aim for him more! Not so much that she would hurt him, but enough to give a friendly warning or hurrah. Come on, the girl was good at being a beater. She wasn't a total wimp.
She looked up at Aleesha and raised an eyebrow, "Yeah I would say so." There was definitely something going on in Aleesha's mind right now, but Jules would pick it out later. No use worrying about it now.
"Sounds like a plan!" She stood up quickly and poked Chance to get moving. "And on the way you can tell us what's on your mind Chance."
And with that she started to walk, slowing down only to make sure that they were in step with her.
((Meh! Sorry this took SOOO long! I fail. I'm sorry! >.>))
It was a good thing that girls seemed to have a mental language of their own. Chance was completely oblivious to Leesh's thoughts of getting him and Jules together, and he was even more oblivious to the fact that Jules caught on. Talk about a mental block!
Chance laughed when Jules poked him, and he hopped up with the other girls. A walk outside sounded like just the thing he needed to clear up some of his bad thoughts.
But... Wait, the girls actually wanted to hear about them!? Was that even allowed!? Chance bit his lip as they walked, trying not to appear too nervous.
"Oh... Well, it's nothing too important," he sighed.
Nothing important. I'm just scared out of my effing mind because I skipped out on registering.
Chance shoved his hands into his pockets and kept up with Leesh and Jules. "Well, to be honest... I'm a little bit scared..."
How could she set them up? She couldn't just ask the pair of them if they wanted to date, teenagers could be very close-minded when it cae to this sort of stuff and Al couldn't risk one of them saying no. Maybe she'd lock them in a broom cupboard, like she did with those two Hufflepuffs last year? Of course, she risked Jules' wrath if the girl found out but it would be worth the risk if they had a good snog, wouldn't it?
Al dashed to keep step with her friends, having fallen slightly behind as she plotted. "About what? Your bangs? I told you those would grow out after a while," Al teased, giving Chance's hair an affectionate ruffle. But she couldn't keep teasing him, he actually looked quite miserable. "No, c'mon, tell Aunty Leesh and Aunty Julesy the problem, we'll help you out, sugarplum."
Yes Aleesha would endure Jules' wrath if she stuck them in a broom closet. It didn't matter that she was her best friend, the first thing she would do once she got herself out of that cupboard would be to hunt down Aleesha and hex her. And then, of course, sit around and help her recoup later. Ha.
"Scared about what?" Jules frowned with worry. "Are you ok? Nothing's happened right?" She couldn't imagine what would make Chance visibly worried, but obviously it wasn't what he wanted to call 'too important'. "And we'll help out as much as we can. Right Leesh?"
Chance wouldn't necessarily appreciate being locked in a broom closet. Not that he would mind being locked in there with Jules (or anyone, for that matter) he just wasn't a big fan of tight spaces... And if Leesh DID lock them in there, she would have to expect some slimy thing in her bed sometime after...
"Well..." he began, getting back on the topic at hand. Chance looked from Leesh to Jules, then from Jules to Leesh. Would they think he was stupid?
"Well, that... Muggleborn registration..." Chance went on, his voice dropping significantly. "You know how they wanted all the Muggleborns to register, right?"
"Sure we will," she said, answering Jules in her most earnest fashion. "You need somebody offed? Who's throat is it? If you ever kill that Kim bitch, I'll show you where the ocean is." Yes, she did actually rap Dr Dre and Eminem out loud, but it was such a common reoccurance the other two probably took no notice.
When Leesh heard Chance's problem she felt a twinge of guilt, an emotion she rarely let herself experience. She had been the one that had told him not to register and now he was feeling bad, which made her feel bad and if there was one thing Al hated, it was feeling bad about herself.
"Well, you shouldn't be," he clipped, perhaps harsher than she had meant to let out. "I told you Dad would lie for you and so would I."
Jules smiled when Aleesha rapped, always enjoying when she did that during a conversation. Though right now the smile came unconsciously as she focused on Chase with some concern.
"I know Chance," she said keeping her voice down and looking cautiously at Aleesha. She knew her friend didn't mean to be as harsh as she sounded. "I didn't register either. But we won't let anyone get you. We'll all stick together, ok? No one's going to tell on you. Not us. We're all going to fight them."
This whole procedure was ridiculous! How could the Ministry want to wrangle up all of the Muggles? That was what they were doing, wasn't it? They were making everyone tense and causing her friends to be scared. That was not right in her book.
Chance felt a pang of guilt in his own stomach-- guilt about the things that could happen. He'd remember the night before registration: he was going to register, but he changed his mind at the last second. And for what? To make Leesh lie for him? And to make Jules worry about fighting the Ministry? They were his friends, and he made it harder for himself to protect them. That was certainly not right in his book.
"I don't want you to lie for me," Chance began, looking at Leesh first. His lips tightened together and he was looking rather serious for once. "You promised me you wouldn't do that if I didn't register. What if they find out and kill us all? I would never forgive myself, Leesh. Never."
He turned to Jules.
"And you," he said, poking Jules on the shoulder. "You don't have to worry about me. If they find me... Then, they find me. But I'll make sure nothing happens to you two, all right?"
Finally, Chance flashed a smile. "You're my favorite girlies! I hafta protect you, don't I?"
Well, that was true, she did promise that and Al was pretty steadfast in her belief that promises should never be broken. But this was different, this was big! Chance could be in danger. The guilt in her stomach gave her a swift kick, reminding her that should anything occur, she'd be to blame. She didn't regret it, exactly, because she still felt not registering was the best thing he could do, but his worrying was almost infectious.
It only added to her misery that he was being all noble and thinking about the well-being of her and Jules. That was just like him! She gave her feelings a brief analyse and realised she was getting quite pissed off, not because he was a decent person, but because it was easier to deal with than being angry at herself. Aleesha's good day was going downhill fast.
"If they find out and kill us all, you won't have to worry about forgiving yourself," she said coolly, completely unimpressed by her own bad mood but unable to really control it. "You'll be dead too, yeah. We can discuss it in the
