Fandom: Homestuck
Characters: Jade, Bro (Dave)
Summary: Jade needs a dress for prom. Taken from the Homestuck Random Generator

Jade was pacing back and forth across the apartment like a mad woman. Three days! She had three days until prom, and Dave hadn’t even bothered asking her until earlier today. Not that he had even asked her. He had walked up to her and said, “Hey, let’s go to prom,” and walked away just like that. He hadn’t even waited for an answer, and she was tempted to say no, but it was prom, and you had to go to that. Having previously lived on an island with no school Jade didn’t want to miss out on a single High School experience, and Prom was only the most important one.

But now she had to find a dress to wear, and she didn’t even have all that much money, and oh god, did they even sell cheap prom dresses. God, this was gonna be so bad. Dave was probably gonna look soooo cool in one of his rad suits, and Jade was gonna have nothing. She half wished she could alchemterize some things, like she used to. She’d had some pretty fancy dresses back in the day, but they didn’t really fit her anymore. She’s grown a few inches, and filled out quite a bit.

On possibly her eighth time passing his door Bro poked his head out to see what the issue might be. He watched Jade pace up the hall, across the living room, and back down the hall before she even noticed him. She’d been tugging her hair and wringing her hands, however she stopped when she saw him and toed the ground nervously. She still had not gotten used to Bro and his sudden appearances, and the way he hardly said much at all.

“ ‘Sup?” he asked her, and with the perfected cool kid attitude, it was hard to tell if he really cared to know at all. But would he really ask if he didn’t?

“Uhh, well...” She decided to not try sounding like a nervous wreck and plunged right into the explanation. “Dave asked me to prom, totally last minute. It’s this weekend! And I have nothing to wear and I’m a little frustrated because prom is like THE THING, and you have to have the perfect dress! But I don’t, and I’m not sure if I have the money for one, and it’s just kinda irritating, you know?”

Bro didn’t say anything, instead he disappeared into his room. Great, now Jade felt like a total idiot. She sort of felt like hitting her head against a wall, and maybe she would rant to Karkat later about this. He enjoyed ripping on Dave since Dave and Terezi’s brief affair. Usually it was unwarranted and Jade felt like some strange Auspistice between them, but this time anything the Troll had to say would be fair game.

Then Bro was coming out of his room again, shaking his car keys at her. Oh... They were going somewhere.

She followed him down to the car, and he let her pick the radio station. She turned it to classic rock, and sang along with all of the songs, occasionally banging her head to it. She did not even notice that they’d pulled up to a formal dress shop until they were already inside (Aerosmith was just that distracting).

“Wow! Wait, I still don’t have any money?” She bit her lip.

“Got it covered.”

“I... Noooo, you don’t have to do that. Seriously. I’ll be totally cool. Maybe I’ll make something myself.”

“Try not to go above $200.”

“But... But!”

But Bro wasn’t taking ‘but’ for an answer, he had gone to chill near the door. Taking his little brother’s girlfriend dress shopping was not under the list of cool things, so he was going to chill while she found something.

All in all they spent more time at the shop then Bro would have liked. Jade spent a while going through the dresses, trying different things on, and occasionally modeling things for him. Nothing seemed quite right to her until she found a black sleeveless dress. It was fairly form fitting up top, but the skirt was looser and over the black skirt was a layer of glittery green organdy type fabric. It fit her perfectly too.

She came hurrying across the store to show it off. “I think I found it! What do you think?” She gave a twirl.

All Bro offered in return was a thumbs up, but it was enough for Jade. She quickly changed back into her clothes and the clerk put the dress in a bag as Bro paid for it. They listened to Nirvana on the way back home and Jade thought she heard Bro humming along.
