Everyone who grows up has to die someday.

So I find myself at the end of another year. And suddenly I am old. This isn't just a number. My body seems to get injured more, and most frightening of all, I am fairly sure my memory isn't what it was. I used to excuse this on an abuse of substances in my younger years, but I think it might just be age. Ok, so 22 doesn't seem like a usual time to ( Read more... )

I wouldn´t jump to conclusions so quickly as you know more than most that humans have a tendency to diagnose themselves with psychological problems and then stress themsevles out because they end up fitting the symptoms, like in a self-induced disorder. I think that can happen with memory loss as well; i´m sure you still remember a load of things, but that is overshadowed for every one tiny thing that you don´t remember because you think it´s proof that your not as sharp at recalling info as you used to be, but we´re all human and that happens a lot. Also, memory recollection is also tied to other factors such as amount of sleep, sleep patterns, nutrition, emotional state and so that could also easily be a factor. At the end (oh and by the way i love that sketch, i had seen it before but i didn´t know who it was by) you say that we´re dying one minute at a time and that we need to use the time that we have to something purposeful, but studying is purposeful. I can somewhat understand your "fear of trying" as it is a "fear of failure," well more so the reality that we have weaknesses and can and will never be perfect. For me i would have a very hard time, especially at this time of the year to find motivation while i´m studying if it weren´t for the fact that i feel that the skills that i learn in my career i could apply to help and serve people later on, and although people might say that it is quite an obvious connection as i plan on studying medicine, i think it would be hard not to find a way in which you could benefit society by honestly having a desire to learn and better your skills. Yes you are a super intelligent student Dave but that´s like saying, i´m already this smart so i don´t need to get any smarter. If we limit ourselves to the norms of society we always prevent oursevles from being anything really incredible. You´re smart but there is always more that you could learn, which someday you could use to help someone with a psychological problem, or track down a serial-killer or i don´t know, but to me stopping serial killers as a criminal profiler could seem like a purposeful reason to dedicate your life to. For me i have a mental problem because whenever i play soccer or frisbee everyone says that i´m in great shape, or that i run like a machine or what not, and i always tell myself that it´s not true because i know my weaknesses; i know that i´m weak and that there are always ways for me to improve. I could just stop and say, yeah i´m good, but i choose to keep pushing so that society doesn´t limit the potential to be the best that i can be. PS when are you leaving the dorms because i´m sending you a postcard today, and i´m not sure if you will still be there.
