Wow, I actually forgot I could enjoy Doctor Who this much!
I may have been softened up by watching "An Adventure in Time and Space" first, though. It was very clearly a dramatized/idealized vision of how Doctor Who got started, but it was well-done and funny and touching as hell, especially the bits with William Hartnell. (Also, did you know that one of the creators was an extremely good-looking gay Indian man? Because OH MY, young Waris Hussein. OH MY.) I can't lie, One is near the top of my list of favorite Doctors, and that scene at the end where Hartnell looks across the TARDIS set and sees Matt Smith - I cried. I am, in fact, tearing up right now thinking about it again. Oh, my fucking heart. ;o; And then having some of the surviving cast and crew members at the end was so lovely. ESPECIALLY SUSAN'S ACTOR, SUSAN NEEDS TO COME BACK, I WANT THIS SO BAD (and it's totally possible now SERIOUSLY IT IS).
And then "The Day of the Doctor" itself - well, okay, the plot was a bit of a mess, I will grant that freely, but I don't really watch Doctor Who for genius plotting so I can forgive it many things as long as my emotional buttons are pressed. (AND THEY WERE, but I'll get to that in a minute.) The stuff with Elizabeth I was mostly cringeworthy - I did like the bit where she shanked her impostor and then faked being a Zygon commander because BADASS, but everything else was pretty awful, so no thanks for those few sour notes, show. D: But other than that - oh, so many wonderful things! I'm still sorry that Christopher Eccleston wasn't there because I think the presence of Nine (either instead of Ten entirely or alongside Ten) would have been absolutely brilliant, but maybe I will fix that with fic. AND THERE WAS SURPRISE!FOUR OMG THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL, JUST BEAUTIFUL AS HELL. And Kate Lethbridge-Stewart! And the scientist lady with Four's scarf! And ZYGONS! And HOLY SHIT, THAT BEAUTIFUL LITTLE MOMENT WITH TWELVE APPEARING ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE - oh man, I'm really, really looking forward to meeting Twelve now.
And JOHN HURT. Omg. His tenure as a Doctor may have been brief, but he's rocketed right up there on my list of favorite Doctors, probably tied with One. He was just so - spot-on. Clever and funny and hopeful, but still dark without being ridiculously angsty, and gods, but it hurt my heart when he started to use the Moment. He had gorgeous chemistry with Ten and Eleven, too, and holy shit, his reactions to "timey-wimey" and "Geronimo!/Allons-y!" were just fucking priceless. SO GOOD. MUCH DOCTOR, VERY EMOTION.
Then the very end... *sob* YES LET'S GO FIND GALLIFREY AND LET'S FIND SUSAN THERE YES I THINK WE SHOULD DO THAT THING. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH I'M ACTUALLY EXCITED FOR THE NEXT SPECIAL/SEASON, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. I really thought I might be almost done with Doctor Who but apparently not...
All right, now I feel a certain need to maybe watch a First Doctor serial or two, so LATER EVERYONE.
