(no subject)
Yesterday there was snow up at my uncle's house (where we ended up after Christmas morning at home), so we got at least a white day-after-Christmas, if not a white actual Christmas. XD Not that any amount of snow could stop my sister from dragging us to see the new Les Miserables movie, which I really enjoyed, even the parts where I was trying not to sob out loud.
But now that I am mostly over my Les Mis feelings*, it is time for Yuletide recs! \o/
First off, of course, there is the lovely Humanity Has Declined fic for me, This Isn't the Homoeroticism You're Looking For. It has Y being her charmingly enthusiastic self and the Mediator being delightfully snarky, and I loved the little splash manga panel near the end!
In no particular order!
Perigee, Asimov's Robot series - this is a fabulous piece of casefic about Mike Donovan and Greg Powell, the poor benighted testers from the early days of robotics. It reads straight out of Asimov, except Greg and Mike get to kiss at the end, so - TOTAL IMPROVEMENT. It is fabulously done!
Ceasefire, Red vs. Blue - I really enjoyed all the RvB fic written this year (SO GO READ THEM), but I loved this one! Cute Christmas-y hijinks for the original Blood Gulch crew? HELL YEAH.
Dear Alex, Madeleine L'Engle - a really beautiful fic about Kate and Alex Murry, and the difficulties of being two genius scientists with genius kids who've spent a lot of time apart. Just - wonderfully written.
Failnonna Saga, fail-fandomanon RPF - HWAET, it is the saga of my favorite meme! :D Which also got a full-length fic that was awesome as hell, but Madness fics don't get as much love and this one REALLY deserves it, because it is CUTE AS FUCK and everything that is wonderful about meme. ♥
How to Be the Best You that You Can Be! Tips for Better Living by Fiona Glenanne, Burn Notice - HAVE I MENTIONED THAT FIONA IS MY FOREVER GIRL? Because she is, and this fic is all the reasons why. :DDDDDDDDDD
Proper Names, Adventure Time - sweet, sweet Marceline and Bubblegum fic! I love the pair of them so much and this is just a nice longish fic for them.
A Thousand Paths in a Single Step, Wheel of Time - fantastic Aviendha-centric fic, beautifully written in a lovely and slightly experimental style! SUPER RECOMMENDED.
Some Unexpected Properties of Wood - there was some great Brave fic written this year, but this is hands-down my favorite. I loved the imagery and Elinor's fierceness and the ways Elinor and Merida are re-adapting to each other, and it's just gorgeous.
Of Uruk + one day you will go away from this, Bartimaeus trilogy - two beautiful paired fics about Gilgamesh and Enkidu paralleling Ptolemy and Bartimaeus, which made me tear up just a little bit. ;o; SO LOVELY, need to re-read the books as of yesterday.
Surveillance, Person of Interest - CARTER BEING THE SMARTEST PERSON. This is seriously tiny, but I LIKE IT SO MUCH. The other PoI Madness treat is also good! Haven't hit the main collection's set of fics yet...
The Case of the Amazon Wishlist, Elementary - okay, so I am only a casual Elementary fan really, but this is ADORABLE. Joan is a total troll AND I LOVE THAT ABOUT HER. ♥
Carry Me, Cowboys and Aliens - a wonderful, sparse, and painful fic that I absolutely loved. Just SO GOOD.
Salt Stained, Choice of Broadsides - AGE OF SAIL FEMSLASH, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING NOT TO LOVE. Such a lovely aching (and hot!) fic.
Godma, or, The Seven Stages of Grace, Dogma - the other Dogma fic written this year was great and adorable (academic jokes! REFERENCE TO THE LINDISFARNE GOSPELS! ♥ ), but this one was simply amazing. ;o; I wanted to give Bethany the biggest hug for most of it, and there were just so many wonderful small details and jokes and heartbreaking moments. It is the post-canon fic EVERYONE NEEDS if they liked this movie.
Sons for Every Daymonth, the Darkangel trilogy - beautiful, beautiful creepiness about the Witch and her sons. o.o Just the kind of creepiness I have always wanted, actually.
Sentinel, Animorphs - TINY AND SWEET AND I WANT TO HUG AX AND TOBIAS BOTH. ;o; I adored it.
If You're Down to Get Down, Gravity Falls - WENDY AND MABEL MAKE A BAND, and it's the most adorable thing. ♥
Girl Talk, Gravity Falls - Mabel and Wendy become BFFs and it is ALSO the most adorable thing and I love it, not least because I have totally been in Mabel's place re: the love of floors. And I am pretty sure I have said "gragrlbrdlth" more than once of a Monday morning. XD The other Gravity Falls fics are also awesome and I rec them wholeheartedly, but this one and "If You're Down to Get Down" are my special favorites!
Cultivar, Revolutionary Girl Utena - a simply lovely post-canon Anthy/Utena fic, which there frankly cannot be enough of, ever. ♥
Costuming, The Non-Adventures of Wonderella - small but completely adorable! OH WONDERELLA, your non-adventures are always great. XD
Passage, the Death Gate Cycle - so, this may not be the best fic on some technical levels, but as far as I'm concerned the wonderful ending more than makes up for any errors. ♥ Haplo and Marit and Alfred raising children in the Labyrinth and being loving and awesome together, YES ALL OF THIS PLEASE.
More Than a Feeling, Halo - okay, so I should probably not rec a fic in a fandom that I actually am not familiar with beyond RvB references and playing a whole two levels. But - AI/human feelings and friendship and love! MY FAVORITE THINGS. ;o; It's well-written and sweet and AI/HUMAN FEEEEEEEEEEELINGS, PLEASE READ IT, IT'S REALLY GOOD.
I, uh, actually have a lot more I want to rec but this post is plenty long enough for now... and I have more fic to read also. XD
*For now; I made the mistake of telling my sister right after the movie that I might try the book, so now I will have no peace until I sit down with the thing. Oh well, if I can get through the unabridged Count of Monte Cristo...
