So call us crazy, but we opted to have Sammy's leg amputated. We met with the surgeon, who said we were stuck between a rock and a hard place, as there was not time to wait for a biopsy result before making a decision. Steve knew he couldn't put Sammy to sleep knowing he didn't try to save his life. So, we opted for surgery and hope for the best. We'll get the biopsy/prognosis next week and pray that the tumor was localized and he can go on to live his full lifespan. It still doesn't mean that he may only live 4 more months---I wasn't into prolonging the inevitable--and if I knew for sure he would be given 4 months to live, I would have opted to put him out of his misery. But, not knowing, we chose the surgery.
He is such an awesome pet and friend. The surgeon said that dogs are 3 legged creatures with a bonus appendige, and that they adapt very well to only having 3 legs. He said in 2 weeks, Sammy should be jumping and running (as if he ever did that to begin with!). He also said that he will be in much less pain today, than yesterday when he had the tumor. I'm anxiously awaiting a call from the vet to let us know how the surgery went. Steve said Sammy was anxious and scared this morning, as if he knew something was going on.. ugh..
