...and not just recreational drugs, but prescribed psychotropic ones too. I'm not saying, none of it should be taken at all, /some/ people do need some of them that does work. ...but if you are not the Already Insane to the point of harming /Other People/ part, just stick to the tried and true and make sure that what's tried is true ya know?
Phil Hartman, you might remember him from such beloved comedies such as News Radio, where he played
Bill McNeal, and on The Simpsons, where he was Troy McClure. Since I don't follow entertainment news and stopped watching the latest News Radio, I didn't know about it until a few years back (after the 2000 mark, he was murdered in his sleep in 1998, by his wife who shot herself hours after). Futurama's lead character, Philip J. Fry was named in honour of him since he, not Billy West who also voiced for Fry, was supposed to play Zapp Brannigan, the character who was created for him.
I've always thought that this was very much a classic abuse case...but gender reverse. From all accounts, Phil Hartman was really, really, cool, Adam Sandler's nickname for him was 'Glue' since he held the people he works with together. It's kinda unfortunate that Bynn Hartman's career didn't take off, but I've always wonder how anyone, no matter the bitterness in their life, could justify to themselves through the act of killing their spouse. In the end, I think it was ultimately her, who repeatedly went back to booze and cocaine in spite of Phil threatening to leave (he stayed married to her for the sake of their children). She was the one who brought the guns into their house because she feared celebrity stalkers...she was the one who came back to the house with a gun, and shot him while he slept, after he finally told her that he will finally file for divorce earlier.
Here's the strange thing, she was high on coke and drunk when she came to her neighbour with the gun...but, apparently, or according to the Hartman's family lawyer at least, she wasn't drunk and high until after she had shot Phil, she only had Zoloft, an antidepressant she was sampling at the time.

I have talked to an expert witness that was going to testify in the lawsuit against
the makers of Zoloft. There was evidence that most of the alcohol and cocaine was
ingested after the killing. She had also been complaining to friends that she felt odd
after taking the Zoloft, which was given to her as a sample pack. The settlement was
undisclosed and more than $10,000. The makers of Paxil lost a lawsuit in
Wyoming last year. It was found that Paxil caused a man to kill his wife, daughter and granddaughter. These meds have a side-effect called Akathisia which has been
linked to violence. The also can cause Mania and Psychosis.
