I cannot believe I am even doing this, but I just might be possibly volunteering to be interested in redoing the site's CSS. I've long thought it needed a facelift, and aside from the fact that I've already been tweaking CSS-based LJ layouts for a while now, this summer I started playing around with redoing my own website with CSS from scratch (here).

Well, I thought we could have quite a few in the end. But for trial purposes I thought we could do it like this:

I provide a copy of the sites css
I make it so you see the site using a different css sheet to everyone else
I hardcode a location for your css sheet, so you can play with it all you like?

What do you think? So you'd need webspace to hold the css sheet for the trial bits, but, well, yeah...

Sure. I have webspace already, but I'd obviously need to make a file somewhere so you'd know where that somewhere was. Um, something. *is braindead*

Alright, the file and the directory don't exist right now because I'm making them up off the top of my head, but let's go with:

http://www.astro.umn.edu/~jennis/HiH/system.css

lol, I am very inventive with css names and places too.

http://hih.leaky-sponge.com/hih.css

that's the system's css.

I'm going to go ahead and set it to the one you provided me with for your viewing of the system. Should take me about 5 mins. I'll reply when it's done, it should appear different to you...

Done, if you log in it should use the http://www.astro.umn.edu/~jennis/HiH/system.css for its css :)

ETA: whoa, just viewed the site without any css, that was weird, lol. It doesn't look like as much as I worried was hardcoded. There might be inconsistencies with some areas though. Any questions, feel free to ask :)

Hrm. It's definitely not using the system's style sheet, but I don't think it is using mine, either. I made a tiny one in the past five minutes, but what I'm seeing shows no evidence of the things in my style sheet. The link is correct in the page source, though. I'll make sure my file is executable! Come to think of it, it's probably not.

Nono, I'm just too retarded to actually compose my file in the directory I just made for it. Deeer. Better now. Pink and awful, but reading my css.

It's showing fine for me?

You might need to check your caching. I might be holding an older copy of the file?

lol, cool cool! good luck with it! You must tell me all about it. As, well, you'll have a totally different perspective than me :)

ETA: also? log out and in again, I added you as a HiH mod so you can see all of the areas, just...don't click anything :) most of the hih mod things don't really do what they say on the label...

lol, you'll see how disorganised that section of the system is! Steph mostly tries to not press things there because, well, most of them have very strange quirks that I don't get around to fixing because we know most of them :)

I just realised that there are a fair bit of different bits of the code used there, I think. There are a lot more different areas to try things out on anyway, hee

ETA: also? how cluttered does the system look with all that on the menu???

Do you have a preferred sort of color scheme. I tend to like bright colors, but maybe you wanted to stick with purples? As a house-neutral color?

well I thought we could have a go, and if you creating one goes fine, we could open it up, and allow other people to have a go and then let people pick from a list and set their preferred css, so, well, anything you'd like really :)

eta: although the way things go, it'll probs just be mine or yours :)

rofl got you! So I should do what I like I kind of have two different things in my head, so I'll let them fight each other to the death.

Here's what I've done so far (screenshot; generated points page)

I can't reconcile my love of super-simple style with a header, but I don't like that there's nothing HP related to it right now. Other than that, I think I have worked most of the kinks out (though I still know of a couple), and hopefully it works just as well on smaller monitors (I did run a test, but not a very sophisticated one-- it works if I shrink my browser).

One thing, the purple "recent name changes" banner is hard-coded onto the pages where it is, and the purple looks sort of gross with everything else going on.

Thanks for the opportunity, this is a lot of fun because I'm still somewhat new to CSS and I haven't had a good chance to code anything since I left school. I'll tweak this one maybe tomorrow and then I have a couple other ideas. I'd like to do something in purple and silver. And work on this one with a header or something HP related (maybe a background image).

It went ok then? Excellent.

I changed the background on the recent name changes area. It should be all fine and fixed now. I made a new class called .recentnamechanges

:) I'm glad it wasn't too terrible. I think there's a problem with the fake!tabs on the pages. The black might be hardcoded into the css?
