I mean, I know that we celebrate, with the big dinner and the treats, and the decorations, but it's the complete opposite in the Muggle world (we dress up in costumes and go door to door looking for candy). I just find it curious, especially since the dressing up was always my favourite part of the holiday.

You must be one of our students from North America! Dressing up in costumes isn't a particularly big tradition this side of the pond, but some of the Muggles here used to be involved in something called guising, which I believe is close to your trick-or-treating. If I'm not mistaken, Salem Institute holds a massive costume ball during Halloween, though of course Hogwarts has its own traditions.

Dear Wanting a Ghost's Life,
I suppose that's because Peeves is a poltergeist and not a ghost - there are some differences between the two. As for your question, however, I would ask that you think it through. Often, becoming a ghost isn't the kind of thing that one chooses to be for happy reasons, and there is no reprieve from it. Very rarely will you be able to simply stop haunting because you're tired of it. If you would like to know more, I encourage you to ask either the Fat Friar or Sir Nick, as they're more likely to be open about their ghostly experiences.

It’s time to have yet another look at the world of fanfiction! Let’s see what has happened in hh_sugarquill after the last edition. I’m certain everyone has found a fic(let) of their liking from the selection our fanfic writers have offered us lately.
The second Saturday Special for October was themed “pumpkin”. Sam/pretty_panther gave us Times Gone By, where Harry doesn’t enjoy Halloween as much as everyone around him. Other fics you might enjoy reading are Spectrum Of Joy by Crystal/bluemermaid, a lovely Ginny/Luna piece; All The Night-Tide by Jalen/jalenstrix where Severus contemplates his love for Lily; and last but not least, Drift by Evy/slumber, where Harry Potter universe meets with the Pacific Rim one.
October Fic/Art Bingo is up! Go claim your randomized Bingo Card here, and start writing! You have until the end of November to complete a row and earn some extra points to your house.
Results for the Writer’s Block #2 are in. Bei/sapphoatsunset took first place with Entry C, while Jalen/jalenstrix and Evy/slumber came in second and third with Entries B and E. That also meant a triple victory for Ravenclaw, congratulations! You can read all the entries here. The next Writer’s Block is already up: This time the theme is to write a fic using the theme of Elation. You have until November 2 at 11:59pm UTC to submit your entries here.

Welcome welcome to another dose of graphics and art! First off, let's share some results over at sortedchallenge. Challenge 5 saw some beautiful big graphics. Check out the winners over here. Sara/arctic_comet of Hufflepuff took 1st place with a Hermione and Ron graphic.
Ravenclaw's Bei/sapphoatsunset took 2nd place, while housemate Meg/partitioning placed 3rd. Tiffany/growling of Slytherin received the award for "best use of text". Challenge 6 raised some concerns in the voting and as a result some rules were made more explicit.
Any graphics that are NOT HP-related will be disqualified completely and not counted for participation points. Also, please keep in mind that voting is *anonymous* and your entry should not give away your identity.

Clubs is bumping right now; it's time to get your pre-Halloween party on!
Club leaders, don't forget to get your points in before the deadline of 5p UTC on November 1! And club participants - as always, make sure you've got your bonus items. Check over at the Bonus Items Registery to make sure you're up-to-date (yours truly just discovered that she was out of photo-developing potion!).
We've got results in from a number of clubs, including the Ministry of Magic, who showed us that Hufflepuffs apparently know their Ministry best (congrats, Puffs!), and Astronomy Club, which sponsored a debate on what we'll do when the sun dies.

It is quite common that choir masters are fond of music, but did you know that no one else but Hogwarts' choir master secretly listens to Muggle tunes? He was seen dancing happily through the corridors while humming a famous Muggle song. Is he perhaps trying to lead the school's choir to completely new paths?
Money, Money, Money
During the past weekends Hogsmeade trip a lot of students were seen gambling in the back alley of the Hogsmeade Village. Was this interhouse unity or a way for certain house members to rip other house members off?!
Falling Over Each Other
Fall term is heating up at Hogwarts, and apparently so are the hormones of students. A head boy and head girl were caught not doing homework in the Astronomy Tower, and the next day, two seventh year Quidditch players were spotted having more fun than usual on their brooms. We hear the professors are not pleased by the extra patrols they are now finding themselves doing to make sure the corridors are clear of all extracurricular activities, so to speak.

Halloween has come to Flourish - if you want some spooky tags you should have a look around right now!
+ SQ-sized tags are still a theme, but the animal theme has ended, so keep your eyes open for the new theme to be announced soon.
+ Hogsmeade happened. I hope you guys had tons of fun! To remember it, you might've ordered tags for yourself and your friends, so check out the delivery spreadsheet our fantastic Flourish mods put together. Maybe somebody got you a surprise tag ;)
+ There is always room for more shops. Slytherin, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw have 3 spots open each and Hufflepuff 2, so if you are interested in having a shop, just apply over here.
And now a word from our shopkeepers ... about their fellow shopkeepers.
1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: Well, based on the other references in her shop, I’m going to guess it’s a song. Perhaps a song or a musical artist that is really important or meaningful to Bei?
Samantha/surmise: I'm pretty sure it's from Bastille's song, Bad Blood :3 (Since she uses the lyrics throughout her updates and deliveries ;D)
2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: This is so hard, because Bei has so many really original and really gorgeous tags!
I love her Chinese Zodiac Babies tags. They are so simple, yet so striking and just adorable. And the font and colors just all work really well. These are the tags I just look at and get all ‘awwwww’ over.
I love the image she chose for this one, as well as the placement of the text. It just gives it such a nice balance, and the coloring is really gorgeous, too.
The coloring on her Alice in Wonderland tags are so gorgeous, I can’t stop staring at them. And I think this one is my favorite of the bunch because of the expression on her face. I just can’t look away.
Samantha/surmise:
ELSA OKAY. AND ALL THE DIFFERENT HAIR STYLES
I actually really like every tag she has in the horoscope portions but... SCORPIOS. SCORPIOS ARE THE BEST.
I have a thing for lights and words and typography and the like so obviously :B
3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: She has so much already! But I think the only thing I can think of is maybe expanding her stock section some more. I’d love some other fashion tags from her, or even some food tags. Everything she makes is just beautiful, and I think she could do some amazing things with those.
Samantha/surmise: I would love to see more photography-stock ! :D
What is the story behind your shop's name?
Bei/sapphoatsunset: Uh, there's not really one. I was crazy addicted to Bastille when I opened the shop. Still love them but I'm actually pondering renaming my shop soon. I like the way "bad blood" sounds, but I've gotten a bit bored, oops.
1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: I believe Veritas is a goddess in Roman mythology, so I’d guess it was named after her, but as for why, I’m not really sure. Sam really believes in the truth above all else?
Bei/sapphoatsunset: Again, I'm pretty clueless. My best guess is this has something to do with truthiness.
2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: Ohhh, another hard choice.
This one is my favorite! I love, love, love how the clouds are almost obscuring the lighthouse and you just see it kind of peeking out. The colors are just beautiful, too, and I like how the text is visible but doesn’t take away from the image.
The text placement on this one is just perfect! And I love the colors. The lightning in the image is spectacular. I mean, who wouldn’t want this tag?
I love Mickey, so this one really strikes me. It’s a touch of nostalgia, and I love that the image is so huge and striking.
Bei/sapphoatsunset:
This makes me giggle. And I believe I pounced on ordering it as soon as the update came through. (If not, I should really rectify that because obviously I dreamed it.) I love the image choice, and the font pairing fits very nicely.
Because music. I love how cute this tag is, and the font placement in conjunction with the other elements in the image.
One thing surmise does spectacularly is stock images. She has an eye for choosing images that have a measure of life to them, which is something you can see in both her current shop and in previous shops. I really enjoy the image of the raging storm here with the nice serif font choice. She also is a dab hand at using serif (which is something I need to work on more often haha)
3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: More of everything! Sam has such a great style, so I was sad when I came to the end of her catalogue. I think she could make some amazing travel tags - cities, mountains, forests - I’d love to see those!
Bei/sapphoatsunset: I feel like she would make really awesome rock music tags, and I would want to eat them all up.
What is the story behind your shop's name?
Samantha/surmise: Haha. Umm. VERITAS comes from the Latin word for truth. I previously had a shop (long time ago) called AEQUITAS, if anyone remembers, and that one means justice, equality, etc. These two names are inspired by the movie BOONDOCK SAINTS! I prefer Aequitas more because NORMAN REEEEEEEEEEDUS but Veritas is a much more pretty word and I think more well known with people haha. I might go through a name-change again, but eh. Who knows :b
1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name?
Bei/sapphoatsunset: Oh my... I'm not sure... I have a feeling it's some sort of reference to something but I'm typically out of the loop on things... All that comes to mind is living happily ever after...
Samantha/surmise: Hmm... Well, it sounds like something from a fairy tale? LOLL. Kinda like "happily ever after" except a different word for the end XD;
2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite?
Bei/sapphoatsunset:
I love the rain-like texture in these. They're so smooth and muted and beautiful.
This just makes me giggle :D Anything that makes me giggle is a win. And it's both simple and readable, which is always a plus :)
YODAAAAAAAAAA. Seriously, I love Yoda so much, and I love how Kristine excels at crisp, clean tags. Looking through her stuff, it looks like I really need to go place some orders!

What is the story behind your shop's name?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: I really love Disney and fairytales and happy endings (at least, graphics wise), and when I decided I wanted to have a shop, I thought I’d have a lot of those types of tags. So I contemplated just naming it Happily Ever After, but I decided it wasn’t original enough, so I thought Evermore gave the same idea but was a little different. So there you go! lol

Animagus is doing well, and there are lots of fun things to take part in this month!
Results are in for the Wanted Animagus, with Ravenclaw leading the way and Hufflepuff a very close second.
October's second activity - Eye of the Tiger - is a simple puzzle that should take you less than ten minutes. Seriously, go do it, make your house proud. You just have to match animal eyes to their names. Super simple.
Now is a great time to fill out an application for the November batch; haven't you always wondered what your spirit animal is?
There is now a trophy case for Animagus! There are some adorable badges to be had for voting and any of the other activities. Check out the Trophy Cabinet over here.
It's not required to have your own animagus form to participate in any of the Wilderness activities, but there are always bonus points to be had. If you haven't participated in a while, you might want to check HERE to make sure that you are still registered, and if you have been taken off the list but want to reclaim your animal, just go HERE.
If you no longer feel connected to your form (and have had it for six months or more), then you can submit an essay stating why to be able to apply for a new form; once you're approved you can submit a new application anytime. Speaking of applications, anyone interested in becoming a registered animagus need only fill out their application (you have to have The Standard Book of Spells Vol 1-3 from Flourish and Blotts too but that's easy stuff)

Whoa! What happened? Well, what happens in Vegas/Hogsmeade stays in Vegas/Hogsmeade unless you need a recap!
We had 5 graphics, 4 writing, 2 Writing and/or Graphics, 7 Misc, and 6 Puzzle activities! There was a whole lotta fun going on this past weekend!
First, you can check out the super tentative list for participation here. A big shout-out to those who did the Superawesome 30 activities! Avi/flyingharmony, William/mmailliw, Evy/slumber, Kristy/spook and Sam/valerie_jackson. Way to go you guys! I know you are all exhausted!
Next be sure and look for your name on the HOGSMEADE DELIVERY SPREADSHEET. It's listed by house and by username, and they will be adding to it as more deliveries are posted throughout the rest of the month. Don't forget to let the shopkeeper know that you have received them!
Let's talk about Bei's Superawesome OMG Activity Wizrding Wear's Walk, Walk, Fashion Baby. Bei hid 100 items through Hogsmeade with a one-of-a-kind activity that was fun and helped you see some past Hogsmeade stuff. Andie/tralfamadore earned 409 galleons with 34 links! You can see the detailed spreadsheet here, and a big shout-out to Bei for all the hard work for this activity!

You must be one of our students from North America! Dressing up in costumes isn't a particularly big tradition this side of the pond, but some of the Muggles here used to be involved in something called guising, which I believe is close to your trick-or-treating. If I'm not mistaken, Salem Institute holds a massive costume ball during Halloween, though of course Hogwarts has its own traditions.

I suppose that's because Peeves is a poltergeist and not a ghost - there are some differences between the two. As for your question, however, I would ask that you think it through. Often, becoming a ghost isn't the kind of thing that one chooses to be for happy reasons, and there is no reprieve from it. Very rarely will you be able to simply stop haunting because you're tired of it. If you would like to know more, I encourage you to ask either the Fat Friar or Sir Nick, as they're more likely to be open about their ghostly experiences.

It’s time to have yet another look at the world of fanfiction! Let’s see what has happened in hh_sugarquill after the last edition. I’m certain everyone has found a fic(let) of their liking from the selection our fanfic writers have offered us lately.
The second Saturday Special for October was themed “pumpkin”. Sam/pretty_panther gave us Times Gone By, where Harry doesn’t enjoy Halloween as much as everyone around him. Other fics you might enjoy reading are Spectrum Of Joy by Crystal/bluemermaid, a lovely Ginny/Luna piece; All The Night-Tide by Jalen/jalenstrix where Severus contemplates his love for Lily; and last but not least, Drift by Evy/slumber, where Harry Potter universe meets with the Pacific Rim one.
October Fic/Art Bingo is up! Go claim your randomized Bingo Card here, and start writing! You have until the end of November to complete a row and earn some extra points to your house.
Results for the Writer’s Block #2 are in. Bei/sapphoatsunset took first place with Entry C, while Jalen/jalenstrix and Evy/slumber came in second and third with Entries B and E. Welcome welcome to another dose of graphics and art! First off, let's share some results over at sortedchallenge. Challenge 5 saw some beautiful big graphics. Check out the winners over here. Sara/arctic_comet of Hufflepuff took 1st place with a Hermione and Ron graphic.
Ravenclaw's Bei/sapphoatsunset took 2nd place, while housemate Meg/partitioning placed 3rd. Tiffany/growling of Slytherin received the award for "best use of text". Challenge 6 raised some concerns in the voting and as a result some rules were made more explicit.
Any graphics that are NOT HP-related will be disqualified completely and not counted for participation points. Also, please keep in mind that voting is *anonymous* and your entry should not give away your identity.

Clubs is bumping right now; it's time to get your pre-Halloween party on!
Club leaders, don't forget to get your points in before the deadline of 5p UTC on November 1! And club participants - as always, make sure you've got your bonus items. Check over at the Bonus Items Registery to make sure you're up-to-date (yours truly just discovered that she was out of photo-developing potion!).
We've got results in from a number of clubs, including the Ministry of Magic, who showed us that Hufflepuffs apparently know their Ministry best (congrats, Puffs!), and Astronomy Club, which sponsored a debate on what we'll do when the sun dies.
Even more thrilling than results, though, is the plethora of activities that end this week! If you're looking for a way to get in some last-minute points this week, check out some of these:
- The Slug Club offers its Halloween Bash, ending at 3:59a UTC on Friday! Whether or not Sanguini will be there, we're not sure.
- Transfiguration Club offers you a unique chance to build a dream house for an HP character using an online Lego builder. Go forth and build.
- Need to get your game on instead? Dueling Club sponsors Duels Against Humanity for some cheeky action.
- Perhaps instead of parties and games, you're sitting alone with your cat and your cauldron, daydreaming of the frights you'll give to children on Halloween. Divination Club has some mysterious spirits in its logic puzzle.

It is quite common that choir masters are fond of music, but did you know that no one else but Hogwarts' choir master secretly listens to Muggle tunes? He was seen dancing happily through the corridors while humming a famous Muggle song. Is he perhaps trying to lead the school's choir to completely new paths?
Money, Money, Money
During the past weekends Hogsmeade trip a lot of students were seen gambling in the back alley of the Hogsmeade Village. Was this interhouse unity or a way for certain house members to rip other house members off?!
Falling Over Each Other
Fall term is heating up at Hogwarts, and apparently so are the hormones of students. A head boy and head girl were caught not doing homework in the Astronomy Tower, and the next day, two seventh year Quidditch players were spotted having more fun than usual on their brooms. We hear the professors are not pleased by the extra patrols they are now finding themselves doing to make sure the corridors are clear of all extracurricular activities, so to speak.

1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: Well, based on the other references in her shop, I’m going to guess it’s a song. Perhaps a song or a musical artist that is really important or meaningful to Bei?
Samantha/surmise: I'm pretty sure it's from Bastille's song, Bad Blood :3 (Since she uses the lyrics throughout her updates and deliveries ;D)
2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: This is so hard, because Bei has so many really original and really gorgeous tags!
I love her Chinese Zodiac Babies tags. They are so simple, yet so striking and just adorable. And the font and colors just all work really well. These are the tags I just look at and get all ‘awwwww’ over.
I love the image she chose for this one, as well as the placement of the text. It just gives it such a nice balance, and the coloring is really gorgeous, too.
The coloring on her Alice in Wonderland tags are so gorgeous, I can’t stop staring at them. And I think this one is my favorite of the bunch because of the expression on her face. I just can’t look away.
Samantha/surmise:
ELSA OKAY. AND ALL THE DIFFERENT HAIR STYLES
I actually really like every tag she has in the horoscope portions but... SCORPIOS. SCORPIOS ARE THE BEST.
I have a thing for lights and words and typography and the like so obviously :B
3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: She has so much already! But I think the only thing I can think of is maybe expanding her stock section some more. I’d love some other fashion tags from her, or even some food tags. Everything she makes is just beautiful, and I think she could do some amazing things with those.
Samantha/surmise: I would love to see more photography-stock ! :D
What is the story behind your shop's name?
Bei/sapphoatsunset: Uh, there's not really one. I was crazy addicted to Bastille when I opened the shop. Still love them but I'm actually pondering renaming my shop soon. I like the way "bad blood" sounds, but I've gotten a bit bored, oops.
1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: I believe Veritas is a goddess in Roman mythology, so I’d guess it was named after her, but as for why, I’m not really sure. Sam really believes in the truth above all else?
Bei/sapphoatsunset: Again, I'm pretty clueless. My best guess is this has something to do with truthiness.
2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: Ohhh, another hard choice.
This one is my favorite! I love, love, love how the clouds are almost obscuring the lighthouse and you just see it kind of peeking out. The colors are just beautiful, too, and I like how the text is visible but doesn’t take away from the image.
The text placement on this one is just perfect! And I love the colors. The lightning in the image is spectacular. I mean, who wouldn’t want this tag?
I love Mickey, so this one really strikes me. It’s a touch of nostalgia, and I love that the image is so huge and striking.
Bei/sapphoatsunset:
This makes me giggle. And I believe I pounced on ordering it as soon as the update came through. (If not, I should really rectify that because obviously I dreamed it.) I love the image choice, and the font pairing fits very nicely.
Because music. I love how cute this tag is, and the font placement in conjunction with the other elements in the image.
One thing surmise does spectacularly is stock images. She has an eye for choosing images that have a measure of life to them, which is something you can see in both her current shop and in previous shops. I really enjoy the image of the raging storm here with the nice serif font choice. She also is a dab hand at using serif (which is something I need to work on more often haha)
3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper?
Kristine/flipflop_diva: More of everything! Sam has such a great style, so I was sad when I came to the end of her catalogue. I think she could make some amazing travel tags - cities, mountains, forests - I’d love to see those!
Bei/sapphoatsunset: I feel like she would make really awesome rock music tags, and I would want to eat them all up.
What is the story behind your shop's name?
Samantha/surmise: Haha. Umm. VERITAS comes from the Latin word for truth. I previously had a shop (long time ago) called AEQUITAS, if anyone remembers, and that one means justice, equality, etc. These two names are inspired by the movie BOONDOCK SAINTS! I prefer Aequitas more because NORMAN REEEEEEEEEEDUS but Veritas is a much more pretty word and I think more well known with people haha. I might go through a name-change again, but eh. Who knows :b
1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name?
Bei/sapphoatsunset: Oh my... I'm not sure... I have a feeling it's some sort of reference to something but I'm typically out of the loop on things... All that comes to mind is living happily ever after...
Samantha/surmise: Hmm... Well, it sounds like something from a fairy tale? LOLL. Kinda like "happily ever after" except a different word for the end XD;
2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite?
Bei/sapphoatsunset:
I love the rain-like texture in these. They're so smooth and muted and beautiful.
This just makes me giggle :D Anything that makes me giggle is a win. And it's both simple and readable, which is always a plus :)
YODAAAAAAAAAA. Seriously, I love Yoda so much, and I love how Kristine excels at crisp, clean tags. Looking through her stuff, it looks like I really need to go place some orders!

Kristine/flipflop_diva: I really love Disney and fairytales and happy endings (at least, graphics wise), and when I decided I wanted to have a shop, I thought I’d have a lot of those types of tags. So I contemplated just naming it Happily Ever After, but I decided it wasn’t original enough, so I thought Evermore gave the same idea but was a little different. So there you go! lol

Animagus is doing well, and there are lots of fun things to take part in this month!
Results are in for the Wanted Animagus, with Ravenclaw leading the way and Hufflepuff a very close second.
October's second activity - Eye of the Tiger - is a simple puzzle that should take you less than ten minutes. Seriously, go do it, make your house proud. You just have to match animal eyes to their names. Super simple.
Now is a great time to fill out an application for the November batch; haven't you always wondered what your spirit animal is?
There is now a trophy case for Animagus! There are some adorable badges to be had for voting and any of the other activities. Check out the Trophy Cabinet over here.
It's not required to have your own animagus form to participate in any of the Wilderness activities, but there are always bonus points to be had. If you haven't participated in a while, you might want to check HERE to make sure that you are still registered, and if you have been taken off the list but want to reclaim your animal, just go HERE.
If you no longer feel connected to your form (and have had it for six months or more), then you can submit an essay stating why to be able to apply for a new form; once you're approved you can submit a new application anytime. Speaking of applications, anyone interested in becoming a registered animagus need only fill out their application (you have to have The Standard Book of Spells Vol 1-3 from Flourish and Blotts too but that's easy stuff)

Whoa! What happened? Well, what happens in Vegas/Hogsmeade stays in Vegas/Hogsmeade unless you need a recap!
We had 5 graphics, 4 writing, 2 Writing and/or Graphics, 7 Misc, and 6 Puzzle activities! There was a whole lotta fun going on this past weekend!

Next be sure and look for your name on the HOGSMEADE DELIVERY SPREADSHEET. It's listed by house and by username, and they will be adding to it as more deliveries are posted throughout the rest of the month. Don't forget to let the shopkeeper know that you have received them!
Let's talk about Bei's Superawesome OMG Activity Wizrding Wear's Walk, Walk, Fashion Baby. Bei hid 100 items through Hogsmeade with a one-of-a-kind activity that was fun and helped you see some past Hogsmeade stuff. Andie/tralfamadore earned 409 galleons with 34 links! You can see the detailed spreadsheet here, and a big shout-out to Bei for all the hard work for this activity!

Happy almost-end-of-Knight Week, Puffs! You all have been kicking some major ass this week, being the badass Badgers I know you all are.
Look who’s back! I know you all missed her last column. Oh, wait. Maybe that was just me xD
There’s a lot to go over, so let’s start with the awesome sigtags and icons that Nikki/nowheretogo26 made us. If you, for some reason, haven’t yet gotten yours, you can pick them up here.

There is still a litttttttle bit of time to donate prizes. There is a lot of awesome stuff already - postcards, gift cards, fics, graphics - so I think everyone is going to be happily surprised. The prize post will be up shortly-ish, so keep an eye out for that!
