God-Moding

Okay, I'm not posting this to sound miserable or to be a pain in the arse, but I have been playing RPG's for over ten years and I've been playing online RPG's for almost two.

There is a thing called God-Moding. To God-Mode is to say that another character, a character that you are not playing, did or said something. This is frowned upon by myself and many other gamers out there.

For example, to say...

Severus watched as Mr. Zabini gave him the finger.

Well, Severus could have watched this happen, if Mr. Zabini had given him the finger. But since I do not play nor control Mr. Zabini, I cannot assume that he had performed this action.

If you are playing with someone and they do give you the finger then you can say you observed it.

It is highly frustrating to read that your character is being controlled by another.

This has happened more then once, it is rather rude and not fair to the person who IS playing said character.

If you see in some posts where a character is God-Moding...

Snape led Julia thru the room, fearing the look of loathing in her eyes.

or

Severus snarled at the werewolf, knowing he was smirking behind his back.

These are not considered God-Moding because these are assumed actions. They may or may not be happening. If you want to say that you received an order from another character, ask the person who plays that character. Or if you want to play a storyline with another character, you cannot assume that it is okay to say that another character is going along.

(i.e....Severus and Remus and even Julia and Remus tend to say things that may sound like God-Moding, but Ladigrifon and myself discuss these conversations before we post. I had permission to say that Julia had met Remus at a Pink Floyd concert. Severus and Remus share a past and we have played them both for so long that our stories are realistic pasts our characters have shared. Even the stories with Pansy and Draco, we have permission to talk about pasts...but we never assume what the other is going to do or say...)

God-Moding makes Blue and Ladigrifon frown.

We have our e-mails posted...we don't bite...as long as we aren't provoked.

(I'll get off my soap-box now...)
