Ellie was curled up in an overstuffed chair in the Ravenclaw common room, resting a hot cup of tea on her knees. Normally bubbly and outgoing, this time she was trying to make herself as small and unnoticeable as possible. A letter and a photograph were tucked into the folds of the over-sized sweater she had thrown over her ball gown. She drank ( Read more... )

Ian Malcolm came into the common room from the dorms and made straight for the bar. A short petting session had been required to calm Fractal down after the events of the Halloween party, and he'd left the kitten sleeping soundly in his room.

He fixed himself a large gin and tonic and carried it, a bowl of pretzels and a handful of cocktail napkins over to Ellie's corner.

"Pardon me. Is this seat taken?"

"That depends. Are you sure that the Invisible Man isn't here?" She stole a few pretzels out of his bowl. "I wouldn't be surprised if I found myself sitting in his lap one day."

Ian groped around the empty chair seat with his free hand. "Seems we're safe enough for now. That being the case, may I join you?"

"Yeah. Knock yourself out. Or did Alan already do that for you?" Ellie gave him a half-smile.

"You've been with the wrong kind of woman, then," Ellie replied. "I got you to do my bidding. That's impressive enough for me."

"It does sound... odd. He promised me dinner and an explanation, but I don't think either of those are coming any time soon. It's not going to do me any good to ask, either. I've talked to Laura a bit. She seems like a nice girl. She told me some things that I wasn't expecting to hear, which makes me think that they might be more serious than they let on. Which reminds me, she mentioned something about you giving Alan a gift that made him angry. What was it?"

"Oh, I'm a pushover when it comes to a beautiful woman." He grinned.

"I can't say that I've talked to the girl at all until tonight. What did she say that was unexpected?"

He choked on a swallow of gin. "Ah. That. Yeah. That was the mixup. We had an exchange of owls over the summer while he was in Montana. He overreacted to something I said - I thought, though now I wonder if I unknowingly touched a nerve having to do with this girl - and I overreacted right back. More than that I'm embarrassed to say, and since you may have noticed I don't embarrass easily, that should tell you something."

"What about for a not-so-beautiful woman?" she asked.

"She made an offhand comment about Alan telling her about the nightmares he had after Jurassic Park, and mentioned that he was stonewalling her about something. It's not so much what she said, but the fact that she got something other than 'I Can Handle This on My Own and Don't Need Your Help.'"

"What did you do, Ian, send him a wedding cake?"

Ian looked from side to side. "Why? D'you see one of those around?"

He chuckled. "Ah-haaa! That's exactly the reaction that made me overreact in that owl exchange. And no, nothing like that, it didn't cross my mind the girl might have anything to do with the issue under discussion until much later. I asked if he had someone, anyone, to help him since he wouldn't talk to me, and that was when he really blew up."
