Grant had selected the next creature to use in Care of Magical Creatures, and now it was time to start extensive research on the animal. Generic texts on magical creatures said that this animals was harmless under carefully controlled conditions, wizards weren't the greatest at cross-referencing. He was sure that if he didn't look carefully ( Read more... )

Bob and I finally managed to find Grant (I'm not directionally impaired, I swear), and though I'd warned Bob to behave himself I knew better than to expect any cooperation.

"Hi," I said, ducking down through the door. I couldn't help but blink--Grant had seemed much younger when I'd seen him last, but I wasn't about to comment. Given some of the weird stuff that went on here, I should hardly be surprised. I took Bob out of the pocket of my duster and set him on a desk.

"Hey," Bob said. "Harry says you've got a catalogue?"

Yep. That's Bob. Straight to the point.

"Hello, Mr. Dresden," Grant said, standing up and offering his hand. He barely had a chance to ask how Harry was doing before Bob piped up. Grant raised his eyebrow, then opened a desk drawer. "Yeah, here it is," he said, pulling out a fresh Victoria's Secret catalogue and tossing it on the desk. "Is that good enough?"

I shook his hand and glanced at Bob, who was eying the catalogue like Christmas had come early. "I think he likes it," I said dryly.

"What's not to like? Harry, you need to get out more." Were Bob capable of drooling, he would have been at that point.

"Yeah, yeah, save it. You've been paid, now work," I said. "If he gets too obnoxious, roll that thing up and whack him with it," I said to Grant, ignoring Bob's sputtered protests.

"I think he might enjoy it too much," Grant replied, watching the skull. He motioned to a chair in the corner. "Take a load off, Mr. Dresden. Can I get you anything to eat or drink?" Sitting back down at his desk, he pulled out a blank pad of paper and a pen. "So, Bob, what do you know about mogwai and werewolves?"

Grant drank the rest of his beer, and momentarily wished for something stronger. "I don't know what she told you, Mr. Dresden, but it sounds like she didn't tell you all of it. Hell, I probably haven't even heard all of it. But he was doing horrible things to her. She said she died after finding out who he really was. My opinion is, he tried to possess her or kill her to keep her quiet."

I blinked, almost choking on my beer. "He was following her beforehand?" I asked. "No, she...didn't tell me that. If she knows who he was, I might be able to figure out what he was...if she'd be willing to tell me." I wouldn't blame her if she didn't--that sort of nightmare isn't something most people like to remember, let alone talk about.

"You okay?" Grant asked.

He rubbed his forehead again. "Could you at least ask her, please? If you tell her that I asked you to, she might be more forthcoming. If she gets angry, she'll probably just be mad at me."

I nodded, swallowing. "Sure I'll ask her," I said. "I've got some experience dealing with people traumatized by the supernatural, so there's some small chance she won't try to beat me." I thought of Murphy, downing Valium and vodka every night to escape her nightmares--if there was any way I could help Laura avoid that, I'd do it. "I have a friend I can ask, too, back home--she might be able to give me some advice."
