The Hogwarts Hocus IRC Channel

Oct 07, 2006 22:19

Since it's been so long (almost 6 months!) since the Hogwarts Hocus IRC chat FAQ was first posted here, I figured it was time to repost it (Thanks, Prima):

First off, go here: http://www.mirc.co.uk/ and download mIRC. Don't
worry, after a month your trial will expire, but all you have to do is
press "continue" when the window pops up and you can use it
indefinitely.

Install that, then open it and go to File>>Select server. Click "add".
For Description, type EsperNet: Random server. For Irc Server, type
irc.esper.net. For Port(s) type 5555. For Group, type EsperNet. Ignore
the password box, then click add. Then you'll hit connect to server.

A window will pop up. In the input line (should be fairly obvious
where it is), type /join #hogwarts_hocus. And then you're in the channel! If you're having trouble getting in, just make a comment here and I'll try and help out. I'll also be in the channel as lawngnomesorceress, so I can help with registering nicknames and so forth.

"I just found an OS X program called Ircle. It's free for a 30-day trial. Once you open up the program, go to the "connections" window, highlight a nickname, and click the "edit" button. You can change your username and select a server from there. Then click "connect" and type "/join #hogwarts_hocus" in the Inputline window. And you're in like Flynn, baby."

"So Snak definitely works. Slightly different user instructions.

When you open the app, it'll ask you for your handle, plus an alternate.

Then it'll ask for network (EsperNet), server (irc.esper.net) and channel (#hogwarts_hocus). You also have the option of setting that as your preferred default channel whenever you open Snak.

Click Next (or OK, I forget), and away you go.

Only downside I can see is that it's $29 shareware, but if that's not a problem, you're set."

"For Trillian users:

Go to "Manage my connections > Add new connection > IRC".

In the top box put in a name for the channel (e.g. Hogwarts Hocus, duh), in the next box down type irc.esper.net and in the one below that a nickname. You don't need a username or password, so ignore those. Then hit connect. A window should pop up, detail the server connection info stuff. Ignore it.

Now, click on the little IRC button at the bottom of the cilent (illustrated here) and select "Add channel...". In the text box type #hogwarts_hocus and then hit okay and TADA! The chat should pop up."

"I got ChatZilla up and running.

First, you'll have to download it from here. Once it's downloaded, let it install, and restart Firefox.

In your browser bar, type irc://irc.esper.net:5555

The ChatZilla window will open. Set your nickname by clicking the button in the lower left corner and selecting "Change Nickname" and entering it in the popup that appears.

Once the esper.net connection succeeds, type /join #hogwarts_hocus in the command field."

Got questions? I'll try and answer them in this post.

Edit: For those who don't know what IRC entails, it's a chat medium. #hogwarts_hocus is the chat room where a bunch of us like to hang out and come up with cracktastic plots in.

fanworks, ooc
