((I'm going to bed right after replying to this. I shall have to continue at a saner hour. =) ))
Emily entered the library and immidiately her mouth fell open in surprise. She had never seen anything like this before. She had always thought that Elder Gutknecht's collection of books were very impressive, but these... They also seemed to be in an impeccable order, something that dear Elder Gutknecht rarely bothered with.
To her immense relief she spotted Anya, looking similarly confused, almost right away. Emily went up to her and smiled as a way of greeting. "Hello Anya! Are you as surprised at the vastness of this place as I am?"
Anya laughed softly as she turned to greet Emily. "Yes, it's much bigger than I was expecting. I don't know what I was thinking. Magic and old books always go together. It's traditional." Anya looked around again, trying in vain to remember how the library at Sunnydale High School was set up. She had avoided class work as much as possible during her time as an involuntary high school student. "I wonder if the librarian is around?"
"Oh, hello." Anya was a bit startled when the house-elf suddenly appeared, but glad to see someone that might be able to help. "Well, this is our first visit to the library, so I was hoping the Librarian could tell us how the library is organized, and maybe point us toward the section with books on Transfiguration. We're looking for something basic, since we're both beginners with this type of magic."
"Transfiguration is three stacks down, two stacks to the right, half way up." He pointed. " There'll be a plaque. School texts mostly, that'll be beginner enough for you. Why you students don't buy your text books is beyond me. But Master Sandburg's made sure there's enough to be borrowed."
Tally stared at them both, especially the one who looked a little....dead. He sniffed.
Emily looked a little uncertain. She did not quite like being stared at like that, though she knew that she rather stood out against other students. Finally she tried smiling, but it came out a bit faint.
Anya glanced in the direction the elf had pointed. "Is there a list of text books we're supposed to buy? I wasn't given anything like that when I got here." She frowned at the house-elf, then shrugged. "Thank you for the directions. We won't take up any more of your time."
"Yes, we've been sorted and we have dorm rooms. I'm Anya Jenkins, and I'm in Slytherin." Anya wondered if they'd broken some rule that no one had bother to mention. "Do we need a pass or something to use the library?"
Anya glanced at Emily and shrugged as if to say 'might as well', then followed the house-elf. She wondered if the librarian would be anything like Mr. Giles.
Tally knocked on a door marked 'Sandburg - Librarian'
"Master Sandburg, two students here. They're wanting information on Transfiguration. They say they've never got any texts lists to buy."
He sniffed again, but didn't crowd them out of the door to the office, where a curly haired man was making notations between books on a trolley and a long list of parchment before him.

"Thank you," she said humbly.

He suddenly looked less suspicious and more authoritative. "What are your names? Your houses?"

He pulled out a scroll and made a notation, looking at the other girl for her name.
"Have to talk to the librarian about this."

He continued to mutter to himself as he walked, fully expecting them to follow. Occasionally the words 'most unusual' were heard.
