Logan---
Didn't see you at Fillerbunny's party. Did see that you and Stephen had some kind of... discussion... at that Carrie girl's Sorting, and he said to ask you. What happened?

Sorry about not coming to the party. I kind of got wrapped up in a spell I'm working on...everyone would be shocked back home, me turning down a chance to party for work. Of course, the last costume party I went to wasn't on the best day of my life...that may have had something to do with it. I hope you weren't looking around for me, or anything.
What happened was that the doctor and a couple other professors were ganging up to give the girl a hard time. I told her not to mind them, and your Stephen came over to us and started justifying to me why she deserved to be told she was worthless, I got upset, and it turned into a thing. That's all.
I don't mind you telling him whatever about me, but I don't like the way he seems to think he's got the right to just demand I explain myself.

I don't mind about the party. Just wanted to be sure you were all right.
Stephen can be... like that sometimes. He has... funny rules about people. About what they're... worth. And about people having to... explain things, sometimes. I don't like it, but there are things about me that he doesn't like, either, so it's only fair. And also, he's awfully touchy about... well... the difference in our ages, so I think she set him off about that. I mean, he's called people out for less. And by "called out" I mean "pistols at n paces," for fairly small values of n. It's kind of silly, really, especially for someone who worries as much as he does about me getting into... danger. But anyway, I think some of that was her hitting a... sore spot... of his, if that makes any sense.
If you want to talk about it, I'll be glad to listen, though. And I appreciate you not minding if I tell him things. Right now, I appreciate that more than just about anything, really.

Well. Thanks for that, then.
I get the being touchy, all right. And I'm not sure he's wrong to be a little worried about the difference in your ages. But at least he does really seem to love you and isn't just looking for a hot young thing to fool around with. For one, that doesn't seem like his style, and for another, you'd know if that were the case, wouldn't you? And anyway, I figure you can handle him and any nonsense he tries to pull. But I don't think he should take out his temper or insecurities or whatever that was on a little thirteen-year-old girl. I want to like the guy, you know - I thought I did. But he was being a serious prick at that moment, and it pissed me off ( ... )

That's what friends are for!
I sort of thought you'd understand the being touchy. Oh, not you too? Though I suppose my perspective is a little... skewed: before I went to the Academy I was doing graduate work in physics so I'm just used to having friends who are older than I am, and Stephen's not older--- or not much, anyway--- than some of the people I was working with. And no, he's definitely not just looking for a plaything! Anything but. Although I think he told that Gin person that we were just... playmates... but that's because he didn't want Gin to try to use me to get at him. Just FYI. He probably shouldn't. I mean, you're right that he shouldn't, but try telling him that. And it looked like she was giving as good as she got, so maybe it would actually be more insulting to her to say that he should go easy on her when he wouldn't go easy on someone else who said those things? I don't know. Anyway, thanks for telling me your side. He pisses me off too sometimes. I love him anyway.Thank you! (a) I'm sorry you don't like ( ... )
