The cake had been fun to make; he was confident enough in his skills not to fuss over it or fret over the mound of decorations. "How many people do you think we can get in here?" Anyone who hadn't been close to him for years would have missed the very faint grin. "We could, we, maybe we should make sure some of the decorations show in the corridors. And there should be music."

Yes, to anyone who didn't know him, he was just being his earnest, thoughtful self, without the slightest hint of mischief.

"I didn't think of that," River said, grinning. "I bet if we hung signs around the halls we could bring more people. More is merry, after all."

At his seat, Kurama groaned and put his head in his hands. River's grin widened.

"And it wouldn't be a party," she concluded, "without music. I personally would like to see the birthday boy dance the Funky Chicken."

"We could write on balloons and send them floating through the school?" Kurama would pretend to hate it, which would only make River more cheerful. "I, I don't know what the funky chicken is, though." He looked at Kurama doubtfully, and felt a small surge of student loyalty. "It sounds more like something he would eat."

"Excellent idea," River said, going immediately to a clutch of balloons. Though, none of them were the amusingly shaped bachelorette ones. Those she wanted to keep here, where everyone could enjoy them at once. She asked an Elf for a marker, and grabbed a decent handful of balloon strings.

"I wouldn't put it past him to try biting were a funky chicken in range," River said, eternally cheerful now that Kurama was actively glaring at them.

"A chicken getting close to Kurama-sensei deserves biting," A said with a smile, helping her untangle the balloon strings and holding the balloons still so she could write. "Should we ask the house elves to make chicken wings?"

"Hm..." He glanced back at Kurama, looking at him critically. "I don't know. He'd look a little too stupid with wings on." She grinned evilly. "Then again, it would be better than Pin The Tail On The Bad Fox."

"Buffalo wings on a platter," he said, without a hint of frustration at needing to specify. "Food-wings with sticky and spicy sauce and creamy dip. Good for licking off of fingertips and River-noses."

River giggled and released a balloon down the hallway, using a charm to nudge it along, instead of letting it float along the ceiling.

"Chicken with sauce. And celery sticks. Excellent idea."

"The house elves can put up more signs on the way to the kitchen for wings!" He kissed her cheek casually. "Cake and Wings in Kurama-sensei's honor."
