Like a Cartoon Theme (Open, Lake, Kurama and a boat)

A mermaid was staring at him.

Kurama had found a moldering old boat out behind a sad looking tree by the lake, and after an hour of staring at it, he'd pushed it out onto the water, climbed in, and let it drift. He'd tethered it (sort of) to shore, but for the most part the boat did its own thing, meandering slowly out to the deepest part of the lake.

Really, they mostly looked like long fish. The one that had been staring at him blinked its second - or whatever - set of eyelids, then made a bored noise and dove back under water. He almost wished he could follow it, but an irrational terror of drowning and the knowledge that somewhere down there Sephiroth's squid girlfriend or whatever lived kept him from doing so. He could live with a little sunburn on his nose, but he probably wouldn't live very long with two inches of water over his head.

Which begged the question why he was out here. First he'd contemplated fishing, to make it look like he was busy (which would, of course, ultimately lead in someone bothering him) but by the time he'd found the boat and gotten it cleared out of most of the lichen and dead animal skeletons, it had been far to late to trudge back to the castle and find a fishing rod to fuck around with, and growing one was out of the question. There were far more dignified ways to waste power.

Though in retrospect, wasting power was something he did really well. He was still tired from the shenanigans with Apos (though if he sat very quietly and concentrated, he could feel Apos screaming through the link he still had with the janenju), and frustrated. As usual, most of the frustration was pointed at himself.

He felt guilty for not keeping tabs on Apos (and before him, Karasu) felt guilty that Mello had been dragged along (though he had been helpful, and having to watch Yuki and Kuro have not-discreet-at-all victory sex after watching a janenju take over someone's body was the best 'told you so' Kurama could think of) and guilty about Kuronue.

Of course, guilt was the emotion he associated with Kuronue almost all of the time anyway, so that wasn't quite a deviation from the norm.

At least he could just float out in the quiet, for a while. Until Hogwarts decided to happen at him again.
