"Fission batteries? Been a while since I've seen those. Bit hard to keep stable, aren't they?" From the eager glint in his eye, it might be guessed that the Master wasn't all that stable either.

She'd seen something like that glint before, whenever Father Elijah got particularly worked up about something. "Oh, these are very stable," Veronica assured him. "I used the Geiger counters on them and everything." Despite the name, they were one of the Old World's masterpieces - definitely better at keeping in the radiation than the "safety barrels" she'd seen on the automated tour at REPCONN.

"So how much juice are we talking about?" He could always find a use for a serious energy source, whether for interplanetary conquest (and really, he mustn't, not when there were so many advantages to being in the Doctor's good graces) or just an evening's worth of really good fireworks.

She took one out, making sure to use her gauntlet hand. "There's a lot going on in these little packages. You could power a streetlamp, a sign, a house, a Protectron - and you could keep the light on for years. Decades, sometimes. They're really helpful somewhere without reliable electricity, if you can get together the right adapters."

"Oh, I'm good at rigging adapters." He gave her a conspiratorial grin. "Improvising's always the most fun, and the bigger the better. You seem like you've done some tinkering yourself. Got any fun schematics on you?"

Father Elijah senses tingling. "For fission batteries? Not much. Mostly I know how to plug them into things that were already there. Well, there's a moonshine recipe someone gave me once..." Recalling a previous bribe, she doubted it would be quite in the spirit of things to give out the blueprints for a gun that shot railroad spikes.

"Oh, I know plenty of things I could plug one of those into." The Master wasn't even consciously trying to give her a politicians' smile, but it just came so easy. "I'll have to custom-make a few connections, but I can do that. I'll just have to think of the right thing to plug it into."

Okay, in just how many ways was this guy like her ex-mentor? The jury was still out, with an occasional peek back in as new exhibits of evidence arrived.

"Well, good luck with that," said Veronica, proferring the battery in her hand. "And if you do run into some trouble, maybe I could take a look." Which would be a chance to see what he planned to do with it. And if there were robots or attempted-killer holograms running rampant in the halls of Hogwards soon after, he'd be on the list of suspects.

"And if I could use a spare set of hands in my workshop?" Because, after all, he might decide to make something he didn't want the Doctor messing with, or it might just be too minor to bother him with... and really, it was charming to see them learn a bit of tech that was just a bit too advanced for them to have encountered yet.

And there went Exhibit M.

"Then I'd raise my hand. Hands." She raised her free hand, to demonstrate.

"So why are you lugging around a bar of gold?"

"Long story short, a friend of mine got roped into helping loot an Old World casino and got out with some of the gold in the founder's vault, so I got some of it for services rendered. I've been lugging it around for a while - problem with something like this is not even the Gun Runners have the money to buy it straight off."

As she spoke, she produced the bar in question.

"Oh, that is good for more than looking pretty!" He looked at the bar with admiration. "Lots of industrial uses for gold, lots of magical uses as well. You'd best hang on to that."

"Oh!" She smiled. "I'll do my best."

"Oh, I bet you will." His smile was flirtatious, but without any real intent behind it; just keeping in practice. "Or it could be part of your bribe to me, and I could teach you a few uses for it in exchange for helping me out."

"Orrr that." She put the battery atop the gold and hefted the lot into her arms. "And what would the other part be?"
