Dean,

I will speak to Lorne and then assist in searching for your brother. Try to remain calm. There are many places he could have gone, not all of them obvious.

Have you asked the house-elves whether they have seen him?

I know that kid, if he's here, I'll find him.

Yeah, they saw him leave Sookie's room, not much else. Damn it Cas, just find out what the demon told him. I'm going to find out what he's been talking to Crowley about.

The piano was out of tune. Not by much. But just enough that he noticed. Middle C was just a tad flat, and every time he played an F chord, the slightly discordant squeak made his eye twitch. Lorne didn’t mind though. A piano that was slightly off key meant that it was well used.

He was playing a melancholy version of “Hallelujah”, his fingers gliding over the keys as he sang. It had taken a profound amount of cajoling to get one of the house elves to magic the piano into his room, but it was worth it as far as he was concerned. The abject disaster that had been the karaoke night he had planned put him off performing for awhile. Lorne’s head turned slightly towards the door. He could sense the angel’s aura half a mile away, all power and worry.

As long as he didn’t want to sing.

"Come on in," he called.

Castiel had stopped in the hallway, listening to the music with his head cocked slightly to one side. Hallelujah. The word was laden with ages of meaning, probably more than Lorne could understand, and both the word itself and the incongruously mournful way in which it was used resonated with the angel on some deep level.

He would have liked to hear the entire song, but his errand was urgent, and he opened the door and stepped inside as soon as Lorne gave permission.

"My apologies for the intrusion," he said. "But Sam Winchester has gone missing, and his brother is concerned for his safety. He asked me to find out whether anything you said to Sam could be a factor." That was, of course, putting it politely.

Lorne chuckled. "You mean you came instead because he's frantic, and when Dean gets frantic, things get broken."

It also meant that Dean hadn't listened to one word of his advice.

He stopped playing and turned to face the angel. Given what he had seen in Sam, he wouldn't be surprised in the least if it did.

"It might have," he allowed. "But before the two of you start tearing the castle apart brick by brick looking for him, I'm going to tell you the same thing I told Dean, and the same thing I saw the last time you sang." Lorne took a deep breath. "You have to let Sam go, both of you."

"Sam's destiny is one he's going to have to face on his own, and it's no small feat that he's being asked to accomplish. But like everything else you three have faced down, it's all going to come down to choice. It's not an easy decision, but it's one he's going to have to make. I imagine the kid needed time to mull things over if he bolted. Don't get me wrong, Dean's a good guy, but he's a bit.. clingy when it comes to his brother."

Castiel sighed quietly and nodded. "I think sometimes Dean has trouble remembering that everything we did, we did for the sake of free will. I understand that we can't make Sam's choices for him. At the moment, my primary concern is making sure he hasn't met with foul play."

He shook his head slightly. "Is there anything more you can tell me without breaking confidences?" He wasn't going to push, but he really didn't want to report back to Dean completely empty-handed. "I'm afraid that Crowley is about to take the brunt of Dean's frustration, and this time I'm not certain he's earned it."

“Foul play?” Lorne looked disbelieving. Wasn't there a no-kill spell in effect on the grounds? “Listen, Sam’s been asked to play a fairly big role in making sure that all of the respective planes swing back into balance. That’s not exactly a small gig, and like everything else, he’s going to get a choice in the matter. I imagine he needed some time to absorb all of that. What he's being asked to do isn't going to be easy for him. He probably needed time. Without his brother hovering over his shoulder trying to make that decision for him.”

He sighed, while he was fairly sure that’s all that had happened, he still had to ask.“This place takes people and puts them back all the time. If you can’t find him, are you sure he’s even still here? Did he get popcorned?”

There was a no-kill spell in effect. He knew from experience that it did not cover all contingencies, not by a long shot.

Cas sighed. "You're likely correct. But danger does exist in this place, and Sam knows it. He also knows that mysterious disappearances are red flags to hunters generally, not just Dean." He shook his head. "I'd have hoped that any of us would have the courtesy to let the others know if we were heading off alone ( ... )

“I can’t really speak for the kid’s state of mind,” he said, almost apologetically. His fingers began wandering across the piano keys again, something he tended to do while thinking. The notes were played softly, almost a counterpoint to their discussion ( ... )

Castiel considered that for a moment, and nodded slowly. "Again, thank you." He started to turn for the door, but stopped. "The song that you were playing when I arrived...I would like to hear it in full, some time."

Right now, though, he didn't have time. He exited the room, shutting the door quietly behind him, and vanished in search of Dean.
