On the day of the Hufflepuff-hosted potluck, the Great Hall had been transformed to accommodate the event, courtesy of Skwisgaar, a few of his bandmates, and several other helpful volunteers from Hufflepuff -- and one Ravenclaw. Skwisgaar and Toki's adoptive dragon-son, Smaug, had assisted with arranging some of the heavier items

Dr. Saunders fulfilled her culinary obligation by bringing in a small cauldron filled with miniature candy canes from Honeydukes; mixed in with the traditional peppermint candies were canes striped in all the house colors.

Finding something suitable to wear had been a chore. Her suitcase was packed with her work wardrobe, relentlessly black, purple and gray plus her ever present white lab coat. But she found a black cheongsam sheath with a little red embroidery, and that would have to do for Solstice spirit.

She set her cauldron on one of the tables, picked up a glass and caught some of the red wine from the fountain. Then she eased her way around the edges of the room, watching the party gather steam.

Thankfully Dean spotted the candy cane and their owner before his brother caught him and hexed him in to the frilly pink robe that was to come later on. He noticed Claire and wandered over in his typical jeans, t-shirt and opened button down with sleeves rolled, hardly festive at all, but comfortable at least.

Dean snagged a candy cane and unwrapped it to place the candy in his mouth before edging his way around until he bumped elbows with Claire, a quick grin and he raised his beer some in a welcoming gesture to the woman.

"Nice addition, don't think I've had a candy cane since I was a kid, thanks."

"You're welcome," she replied, returning the gesture with her wineglass. "I don't really have a traditional Christmas dish, but I figured those never go out of style."

"Yeah, I just threw out two of my favorites and figured that was good." Dean sipped his beer, then offered a hand out to the woman, the candy cane hanging from one side of his mouth "Name's Dean, nice to meet ya'"

She smiled and shifted her wineglass to her other hand to take it. "Claire. Claire Saunders. New here, sort of."

He gave her hand a firm shake with his roughened one then took it back, that grin still on his face "Same here, so did you get to come in with the hat or the butter?" He figured that was an ice breaker that was as good as any in this place.

She drew back slightly, grin widening. "Ahh...the Hat. Do I even want to know what's up with the butter?"

"Probably not, I'll tell you this much, it ain't as kinky as it sounds and I'm glad to be out of it." Dean laughed, resting back against the wall as he took a glance around the party. He could see why his friend had made mention of her and so far Dean had to admit, she wasn't a bad lady.

"So how long you been stuck in this school? No detentions for you I'm bettin'"

"Whatever it is, I can almost guarantee I've heard kinkier." She laughed. "I've been here a couple of months, I guess. I've mostly kept to my room and the library, just your basic Ravenclaw grind. You, now." Claire looked him over with a mock scowl. "You look like you've had a detention or two in your time, and consider it worth it."

Dean's eyebrows shot up and he just stopped himself from the overtly flirtatious respons to that initial statement, but even he wouldn't go there on some one he suspected some one he cared for had a crush on "Ah, so you're in the house with the bar, more of a party girl than you let on?" He grinned showing he was teasing and when she mentioned detention his grin only widened "More than once, just not here, yet, guess I get to serve after the party. I got my first one all hot and buttered by some backwards talking demon guy. I was here, maybe an hour when it happened."

"Mmm. Not so much party time as booze is the best way to give our brains a break from Life's Big Questions, sometimes. I've done a few rounds on those."

She grinned at Dean's description of his unpopping. "This place is so bizarre, I'm surprised people don't get in trouble like that without meaning to more often. So what is detention around here like, anyway?"

"Now you're talkin' a language I know all too well." Dean raised his beer in a kind of salute over the fact of using booze to forget life's big questions for a few moments, a time or two he had ran to the bottle, as if that wasn't already obvious from his demeanor.

"Not sure yet, the guy hasn't called me down, but if it's a demon I'm sure it's got some hell fire written all over it" He said as a joke, but there was a flash in his eyes, a moments memory of the last time a demon had put him in a form of detention. The rack...and the things he had done afterward, after he came off that rack.

Claire caught the flash in his eyes, but kept her tone light. "Well, if he raps your knuckles too hard, give me a buzz in Ravenclaw - I'm a doctor by trade," she replied. "You run into demons a lot?"

"You and Cas should get along then, he's got that whole angel healing mojo crap goin' on. But thanks."

Dean gave a snort of laughter and for once answered that question honestly to a stranger considering around here demons were pretty much common place "In my line of work, more times than I would have liked."

"Sounds like an interesting line of work," she said, and brightened. "You mean Castiel, the angel guy? I met him at his Sorting - he did me a good turn, there."

"Sweet heart, you have no idea." he responded to the comment about his line of work and then Dean grinned, beer to his lips to hide the little mischievous turn to that expression at her reaction to Cas' name "That would be the guy, and sounds like him, he's the only of them isn't a dick."
