Application for Brendan from The Secret of Kells

Dec 16, 2010 16:56

Years, perhaps too many, had passed since Brendan had fled the Northmen at Kells, following Brother Aiden. The Book had been at last completed, and Aiden departed to the next world, leaving the Book, and the faithful cat Pangur Bahn, in Brendan's care ( Read more... )

Now that both of his boys were back at Hogwarts, Bobby had been feeling pretty damn good. He even paused at the Sorting Room and stuck his head inside. The mention of books, especially expertly illuminated ones was more than enough to get his attention. His house back at the salvage yard was a treasure trove of ancient books and lore.

"They ain't gonna take nothin you don't want to part with," he said, nodding at the way Brendan seemed to clutch the book close.

"Ah," Brendan sagged a little in relief. He'd hate to have to part with the book, even for a short time. "I couldn't bear to part with this, at least. Quill and inks and paper, those can be found and made again. But this," he patted the worn leather gently, surprisingly unworried in the presence of this gruff man. He reminded Brendan of the people who had fled to Kells: rough, good folk.

"It is a treasure I have protected with my life, to share with the people. To just give it away... would be a terrible loss."

A fellow book lover. He quirked a grin. "I don't think half of 'em would know a literary find like that even if you knocked them over the head with it. That's the real thing, is it? Mind if I take a look?"

Brendan grinned happily and handed the man the Book. "Please do, It was made to be shared."

Bobby took the book reverently, handling the pages with the utmost care. He let out a low whistle as he slowly turned the pages. A few times his fingers stretched out, almost tracing over an image here and there, but not quite making contact with the paper. He examined every page before he finally looked up.

"Damn. I've seen a lot of old texts, illuminated ones, woodcuts, you name it. This," he nodded down at the book, "this is somethin' special. I've never seen anythin' that beautiful."

Brendan bowed his head, beaming with pride. "I thank you. It has been a life of work and I have to admit some pride in it, though the work is by no means entirely mine."

He handed the book back to Brendan. "Can't say I blame you for not wantin' it outta your sight. I've seen a lot of copies, but this one is damned impressive."

Bobby adjusted the trucker cap on his head before sticking out a hand. He had been so fascinated by the book that he forgot to even mention his name. "Bobby Singer."

He took Bobby's hand with a smile that was something like fatherly pride. "I am honored that you think so. It seems that the book has survived even into this century; I'm glad our work has not been undone."

"Well, I'm somethin' of a collector of rare old books, but yeah. The Book of Kells survived, you and your brothers did some damned fine work preserving a lot of old lore." Old lore that had saved his ass on more than one Hunt in his extended career.

"I was wondering a while ago if there might be an Abbey here, but," at the risk of being rude, he wondered, would there be need for religion in a place like this? Surely the students were busy with pagan magics more than holy texts, not that he found fault in either. But while the stone floors here were like home, in a way, it just wasn't the same.

Ah well, he would get used to it. He waved a hand to gently put the question aside. "I was really more concerned with the houses. A few people have told me I would do well in Hufflepuff. Can you tell me more about them? Are there required lectures for a student of a particular house, and such."

“Naw, it ain’t an Abbey,” he said with a snort. Given the events he had seen before coming to Hogwarts, the man's faith was a little.. muddied.

Bobby peered at Brendan and nodded at the assessment. “Yeah, Hufflepuff oughta do right by you. It’s a good place for the industrious sort, people that like helpin’. Slytherin’s for the sneaky sonsabitches that come through, Ravenclaw’s for anyone who thinks they’re rather clever, and Gryffindor for the heroic types.”

"As for lectures.." he offered a shrug, "There ain't that many of em. Most of the professors don't hold classes more than every few months, so we're kinda left to our own devices."

He nodded, filing all the information away. It was disappointing that he'd have no Abbey to pray in - old habits did die hard after all - but there should be plenty of places to have a quiet moment here.

"It doesn't sound like a terrible system, in some cases, leaving a student to learn for himself is better than being shunted into a group and learning just the words on the surface." He beamed at Bobby. "I would ask then, for a vote to Hufflepuff. It seems like the right house for me."

"You got it."

Bobby nodded at the book, "And that's some damn fine work. I'd love to see any other illuminations you might do while you're here."
