He was...

He was in a slick heap on the floor, the smell of butter the first thing he consciously aware of. The smell. It was impossibly silent, an undreamed-of silence ( Read more... )

Could it be? Was that ...

... yes, it must be ...

... the unmistakeable sound of villainous laughter? Possibly, ever so slightly, a bit unhinged, and definitely chock full of joie de vivre? A zest, a veritable zeal, for nefarious doings and schemes aplenty?

SURELY IT WAS SO!

Lezard began to laugh his own crazy laugh. Howling and cackling to wake the dead, he floated toward the source of the other laughter, and found it near the popcorn room.

"Why, hello there!"

Ah, a confident man. Good to see. Potentially useful, just a matter of finding the right leverage.

"Hello," he said in his most charming Prime Ministerial fashion. "You look like someone who knows how things might work around here."

There were many things Lezard lacked. Confidence was certainly not one of them. A wardrobe less suited to a Renaissance Faire was another. He beamed beatifically, and bowed to the appropriate depth to show courtesy without implication of servility or inferior status. (The appropriate depth by the standards of the royal court of Dipan, that was. Lezard had not much opportunity to grace any other.)

"I have the privilege and delight of being Lezard Valeth. As such, it is often true that I know how things work, in many places." Except when he was catastrophically mistaken, hampered by hubris, or ... dealing with women. "How rare to make the acquaintance of a gentleman so perceptive. Are you here for business or pleasure?"

"Oh, come now," he said dismissively. "Only the little people have to worry about unpleasant toil. Great men need only work to their own ends."

And Lezard clearly thought of himself as such.

"Did never a pleasant end require diligent toil to be reached?" Lezard tilted his head. "This is not to say that the work itself cannot be greatly pleasurable."

In fact, the answer suggested to him mainly that the gentleman either did not wish to discuss his purpose for being here, or did not know said purpose himself. The former was always understandable (though a true evil overlord would suffer an inexplicable compulsion to unburden himself of his plans in dramatic monologue from time to time, this compulsion was erratic in Lezard's experience, and greatly dependent upon the proximity of a hero[ine]), the latter hardly uncommon (though amusing to Lezard if it were the case, and in another mood he might have pressed the point in the hope of such amusement).

In his present mood, pressing for details was just too dull to bother doing. Though there was one thing he would like to know:

"Have you yet experienced enjoyment in these halls?"

Which was Lezard-ese for are you having fun yet?

Oh, he was most decidedly having fun. He hadn't even had to walk ten yards to find out where he was, when he was, and even that his dearest enemy was here twice over. Not enough material for a decent evil plan to cackle over yet (and he did so dearly love to gloat about his schemes!), but a running start.

"Oh, yes. I'm not going to be bored here at all."
