Application: Firekeeper and Blind Seer (Jane Lindskold's Firekeeper saga)

Sep 04, 2010 23:24

The young woman who walked into the Sorting Room carried a bow and quiver of arrows on her back, but ignored those in favor of a knife with a large garnet set in the hilt. She looked to be about twenty, and very fit. Her curly brown hair was chopped close to her head where it wasn't pulled back into a tail, and her tanned skin was laced with pale ( Read more... )

A buzzing of wings heralded one of the smaller residents of Hogwarts. Jenks flew into the Sorting Room, curious. Catching sight of Blind Seer, he sighed heavily. "Well, at least you're not another cat," he muttered, careful to stay well out of range. The last dog-type he had met didn't try to eat him, but he did bark furiously enough to give him a headache.

The pixie flew over to the application, gold dust scattering in his wake. He landed lightly on the paper and paced it's length, scanning it only briefly. The application never told him anything important, but he felt that someone should read it anyway.

"Hey," he said finally, coming to hover in front of the woman. "Welcome to Weirdsville."

At first, Blind Seer thought that the buzzing was a hummingbird, or one of the larger insects. His ears perked at the voice, though, and he sniffed to get a better sense of what was in the room with them.

Firekeeper waved her hand in front of her instinctively at first, trying to ward off whatever buzzing thing was coming at her. Such encounters usually only ended in discomfort for her. But this thing spoke in the human tongue, and when she peered closer, it looked for all the world to be a tiny human, with wings. Her eyes widened, and she took a step back, glancing down at Blind Seer. His eyes were fixed on that spot as well, so she was probably not imagining the tiny winged human's appearance. That was both heartening and extremely disconcerting.

"Weirdsville?" she repeated, no trace of irony evident in her husky voice. "Thought was Hogwarts."

"Watch out!" he chimed indignantly. "Honestly, you humans. Always waving your big hands around with no concern for what's flying near you."

He hovered near them both, but well enough out of reach, his hands on his hips. Jenks wasn't angry, he was used to such behavior from bigger folk and had become used to it a long time ago.

"Aaand that was a joke. It is Hogwarts, but it's probably gonna seem weird as hell to you."

The pixie turned his attention to Blind Seer, "Please tell me you chase cats."

"Wolf," she growled under her breath, irritably. Not that it mattered. She looked human and that's what people took her for, but she was wolf in her head and her heart, where it mattered.

Blind Seer flattened his ears indignantly. "Tell him that I chase whatever I please, and catch most of it because unlike inept and cowering dogs, I am a magnificent hunger."

Firekeeper translated exactly, and could not keep the smirk out of her voice.

"Oookay. Sense of humor is obviously not on the list. Fair enough," he said with a shrug of tiny shoulders. "And for the record, I've never met a wolf who wasn't a good hunter once they shifted."

He dropped down to eye Blind Seer, "So, you can understand us and talk.. kinda. There are a few talking animals around here so you should be in good company."

Jenks zipped back up to Firekeeper, circling her like an excited moth. "I don't know if there are any like you around here, I haven't smelled any recently," he volunteered, mistaking her for a werewolf.
