Application: Acorna Harakamian-Li, the Acorna series

Jun 28, 2010 10:17

Acorna isn't sure what to make of this. She looks around the sorting room - strange and austere, but even without the purifying effect of her horn, the air is clean and safe if a little musty, and she doesn't see any immediate danger - and turns back to the door she came in through, which looks nothing like any hatch ever installed on the Condor. "You are a healer, then."

Ah, Aigis, thanks for the obvious.

"A healer is useful in battle."

"Well, yes," Acorna agrees, somewhat reluctantly. She has, after all, seen a good deal more battle than most Linyaari, which is to say, any at all. "But battle is hardly the only situation where a healer is useful."

"Yes, but from what I have observed doctors do not have the ability to just heal injuries, they must examine a patient and do complicated things."

"I have little experience with human doctors," Acorna admits, "but you would be incredibly unlikely to find one of my kind on a battlefield, in any situation short of our homeworld being threatened. We Linyaari are pacifists."

"That is admirable. I hope your people are able to keep that pacifism, and that nothing forces you to break it."

To be honest, her people's aversion to conflict was sometimes infuriating to human-raised Acorna, but she gracefully accepts the complement to her species with a close-mouthed smile. "Thank you. I hope so as well."

"You wouldn't happen to know where we are?" she asks, and then adds, "or when?" This person does not look like one of the Ancestral Friends, but then, the Friends did tend to vary in appearance a great deal.

"This is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, located in Scotland. The year is 2010."

Acorna sighs, rubbing the base of her horn. "Scotland - that would be on Terra, wouldn't it? And back in the national period. Lovely. Just lovely."

"Possibly. It is called Earth now, but it would make sense to be called Terra in the future."

"I believe Earth is the old word, yes," Acorna agrees. "Rather out of fashion these days... or at least in my time. I don't suppose you have any idea how I got here and now?" Of course, she's got her own theory, but she rather hopes it's not correct. Acorna's dealt with Grimalkin enough for one lifetime.

"No, I don't. Everyone just seems to appear here with no knowledge how. I did. So did my friends."

"Do you know if there are any..." How does one describe the Ancestral Friends? "Any immortal shapeshifters around? Most would have at least one humanoid and one animalistic form, and they would probably fancy themselves to be superior to other sapients."

"I know of no one by that description here. However, I am a newcomer myself, so my knowledge is flawed."

"I understand." Acorna sighs. "Thank you for your help... I don't believe I caught your name?"

"I am Aigis. I am supposed to vote you into a house now."

Acorna shakes her head. "I'm afraid you've lost me again. A house?"
