The last experience Brienne had had with mistletoe was bittersweet. So, even though a part of her was far from surprised by its presence for the second year in a row, she might have wished to avoid it. Unfortunately, there was little hope of doing so. Especially since there was a large clump of the stuff in front of the Ravenclaw common room door, and she had to pass under it in order to enter the bar, where she hoped to locate, or at least summon, Methos.

Methos hated holidays. They were usually poor imitations of older festivals; when all the meaning and substance had become nothing more than an echo of the past. Christmas was no exception, it's focus on friends and family only reminding him of the friends and family that were long dead. Holiday blues, immortal style.

As a result, he had been hiding out in the Ravenclaw bar, steadfastly attempting to stay there and drink until the whole affair was over with. It was only when he caught a glimpse of Brienne near the door of the common room that he decided to leave the bar.

"Strange tradition, isn't it?" he murmured, his hand squeezing hers.

"A bit," Brienne answered, smiling and returning the squeeze. "Especially at Hogwarts. But then, this holiday season isn't something we have back home." She handed him the package. "It isn't much, but I wanted to get you something," she said shyly. "And I couldn't think of anything else I knew you'd like."

The package contained a set of fancy fountain pens and the requisite ink. "For your journals," she explained simply. She had no idea if she'd gotten anything that would actually serve him well as a writing instrument, but the pens were at least pretty.

Methos opened the package and smiled. "They're beautiful, thank you Brienne." He ran his fingers over the pens before setting them aside to draw her into an embrace. "And they're perfect for the journals."

He pulled back a bit and nodded up at the cluster of dark green leaves and white berries. "If it's a Hogwarts tradition, then perhaps we should honor it?" he asked, a glint in his eye.

For a moment, Brienne hesitated. Then she nodded, smiling shyly and returning the embrace. "Perhaps we should," she said. And, really, she had no desire to kiss anyone else here at Hogwarts.

Her shy smile was all the encouragement he needed. Methos slid his hands up her arms, to cradle her face in his hands before drawing her closer.

"I've been waiting for this for a long time," he whispered, before kissing her gently. It wasn't an intense or passionate kiss, but there was no mistaking the depth of his feeling in the touch.

After another hesitation, Brienne kissed him back. Being kissed was not something she had had much experience with. Jaime had kissed her, last year, but then he'd become popcorn shortly thereafter, and the other times they'd kissed, she'd been borrowing Cersei Lannister's body, which didn't count. But this was different. It was just the two of them, with no pretentions and no complicated past. She was half afraid that if she let go of him, the moment would come to some kind of disastrous end. So she allowed herself to surrender to it, enjoying the kiss for as long as it lasted.

Eventually, the basic need for air drove them to break the kiss. Methos didn't let her get far though, keeping his arms wrapped firmly around her. He was a little worried that she might get flustered or bolt and had no intention of letting her do either one.

He touched his forehead to hers. "I'll have to thank the elves later."

Brienne very well might have bolted if he hadn't been still holding her. Somehow during the kiss her arms had wound around him in their own right, and, not knowing what to do with them, she kept them there.

At his comment about the elves, she couldn't help letting a short laugh escape. "Yes. That was..." She groped for a word to describe that kiss, couldn't find one, and settled for "That was incredible."

He leaned forward, his lips just brushing hers. "And well worth the wait."

Methos produced a box from inside his trenchcoat. "While I'm not one for holidays most of the time, I thought you might like these." Inside the box are a pair of shining vambraces, laying on a soft ivory tunic embroidered with blue and silver at the sleeves and throat.

"I do like them!" Brienne said reverently, examining the vambraces with a critical eye. "Thank you." She had to fight the silly, maidenish urge to try them on right that very second.

Her smile was infectious. Methos extended his hands to take the box, "Try them on, I want to see if they fit. I had to guess at the sizes, but I think I've got a fairly decent eye for it."

The vambraces actually fit rather well. Brienne took a moment to admire them now that she was wearing them. They were made of good-quality material, too.

"These are perfect!" she exclaimed. "Now, if my fellow prefect calls on me to defend the school I'll be more prepared." Methos was even bringing out a bit of self-depricating humor that Brienne hadn't known she possessed.

"If the school is under attack, the best tactic would be to head for the hills. The instructors can barely cobble together classes, I shudder to think of what defenses they could muster."

How in the hell did he get on the subject of assessing the tactical strengths of Hogwarts?

Methos shook his head, "Well I'm glad you like them. Now if I can persuade you for another round of sparring, you can try them out."
And he had no ulterior motives at all. Nope.

"True enough," Brienne conceded. "Though from the sounds of it, the Muggle Studies professor... knows what he's doing."

At his suggestion of sparring, she grinned. "Of course. We ought to make sure these will withstand the pressures of constant use," she agreed lightly. Nope, she didn't have any alterior motives herself, either.

((Fade to black and assume a good time was had by all?))
