The Unpopping of Pharaun Mizzrym

Nov 28, 2009 11:49

There was a very unhappy drow currently leaving the popcorn room. He was mostly unhappy because he was fairly certain the butter he was coated in had completely ruined his clothes. And also because the vague memory of something called "Ravenclaw" had suddenly dropped itself into his mind, which was rather unsettling ( Read more... )

The strange mood in the Great Hall convinced Raistlin that he should be somewhere else. He wasn't entirely sure what magic was in the air that was affecting the students, but his rather self-serving nature kept him from lingering. At the sight of the drow in the hallway, he went very still. He had not encountered a dark elf since his Test, when one nearly killed him with a fireball.

"Yes, dark one, the surface. You are in fact quite far from home."

"I'd gathered that, thank you," he replied dryly. "The question is where exactly I am."

The red-robed wizard laughed mockingly. "You are no longer on your plane of existence. Here there are few creatures of magic, and you are the only dark one I have seen. The school is called Hogwarts, it is a school of human magic, but I would wager it is different from the arts you are familiar with."

He raised an eyebrow. "I would imagine it would have something to do with this wand I am sure I did not have before. I certainly hope the magic here is different; if I wanted to attend a school that teaches magic I am familiar with, I would have returned to Sorcere."

Raistlin snorted, "The wands are needed to act as magical focuses here. There are no spell components collected, although there are words of power that are used."

Yes, he seems to think reliance on a wand as less than reliance on spell components.

He nodded thoughtfully. "That could make things a good deal more convenient. No need to worry about running out at a crucial moment."

This time he was careful to keep the tone of his voice even. The last time he met a drow in magical combat, he nearly died. "Anyone who runs out of the proper components is either unprepared or about to be overwhelmed."

He coughed, "And I have yet to see any spell here that has the same impact as fireball, or burning hands."

"Not all powerful magic is evocation," Pharaun replied evenly. "Besides, one sufficiently cautious and creative can get by with their components running low, if they're caught in unforeseen circumstances. That doesn't make it a pleasant experience."

HIs comment earned a slightly wheezy laugh. "No, it does not. But it does serve as a reminder that in magic, improvisation is a necessary skill."

"I am Raistlin, until recently of Krynn."

He inclined his head. "Pharaun Mizzrym. Of Menzoberranzan, on Toril."

He pushed back his hood, the gold cast of his skin glimmering in the light. "I haven't read about Toril yet. The library here is quite extensive, but I imagine it doesn't cover the various planes we are called from."

"I suppose I shouldn't be surprised." He raised an eyebrow at the odd color of Raistlin's skin, but didn't say anything. "I don't suppose you could direct me to somewhere called... Ravenclaw?"

Raistlin nodded, "I was headed there myself," he rasped.

As they passed the popcorn room, he nodded at the gigantic kernels that remained. "Do you remember much from your previous visit here?"

He shook his head. "It's starting to come back, but any real recollection will most likely take quite some time.:

"I imagine so. It is said the process takes a toll on the memory. The house elves will be able to show you to your previous quarters and retrieve your things if you were gone for an extended period of time."

Pharaun nodded. "I think that might be helpful, yes. How does one go about finding..." He looked down at the one that had chosen that moment to appear just behind him. "Never mind, here's one now."
